Speaker to line or instrument level conversion

Post by pjd3 »

Heyo,

Thought I'd try for an early start on the direction on this idea. Comments definitely welcome! Thanks.

Scenario - using both a Fender nonreverb and a Marshall 6V6 plexi live on stage with 4 piece rock band. Hates not having reverb and uses a Hall of Fame pedal or similar at end of pedal board. Hall of Fame pedal is fine going into nice clean Fender amp But, will be a problem with a 20 Marshall with PPIMV while getting distortion and crunch.

Seriously entertaining the notion of having a "speaker-to-line level/instr level" circuit that would tap of Marshall plexi speaker, into an effects device and into the Fender amp low input when A/B footswitch is toggled.

So really, I'd be using the Fender amp to create the Marshall amp reverb. Should have heard of a person or place that has ventured into 'speaker-to-line or instrument level" conversion Id be grateful if you'd pass it my way.

I suppose it would be best to have separate FX pedals or units for both the Fender and Marshall amp separately. Its a desirable thing to go from Fenderish rhythm with a light plate reverb to a Marshall lead tone with multi-effects for solo's.

This would be a great setup for what I generally do, would be extremely versatile and cover about all my bases if this could work.

Thanks for reading and any input is surely appreciated!

Thank you

Totally doable and been there, done that! When I can get a few minutes, I'll share my take on the many plusses and minuses of the wet/dry type of rig you have described, as well as several ways to achieve it! Done well, from a sound/tone standpoint, it is the absolute best way to do effects, although hauling and setting up/tearing down can be daunting/cumbersome!

It Can Be Fun!

Hey thanks Ballzz, its good to hear that I'm not dreaming about crazy ideas. It does seem like a good way to go if certain things are done and brought together in a thoughtful manner. My Fender amp is very clean, it has a Mid/raw to remove the scoop if needed so, I had no reason to think that getting the sound from the 6V6 plexi amp, into a reverb/FX device and into the Fender wouldn't make for a decent rendering of the Marshall with reverb on stage.

Ha, I even considered the prospect of building a little preamp, micing the plexi and running preamp into an effects rack/box and into the Fender low channel.

And thats another thing I havent considered, is if the Fender inputs (standard Fender 2-input) will alot for plugging in something into the low channel without changing the level and things on the normal "high" input that is customarily used.

Anyways Ballzz, thats a mighty generous and helpful offering on your part, I'd love to see what you did as a solution for your wants, and I look forward to seeing your plan out. No rush, I won't be done with this second amp build for another 2-3 months but then will be eager to make that happen in some form or another. I've been looking at things regarding "speaker-to-line input or instrument level input" and there are some things out there, but nothing nailing exactly what I'm calling for. I'm OK with building things as I build my own pedals, preamps, compressors and things anyways. It would be just another learning project experience - but I'm fine buying things off the shelve as well.

Thanks so much,
PJD3

Can I add that the best way to control the FX level is with a volume pedal so you can adjust on the fly.

Jimmy Herring does the same thing
