4 green heater wires?

Post by pjd3 »

Hi, would like to pick your brains for a moment here.

While gutting my Bogner Alchemist for a 6V6 Plexi amp (Sluckeys plans) I see that there are 4 green heater wires coming from the PT. These transformers that came with the Alchemist are of Asian source and I've failed so far to find any documentation on their electrical specs.

Have you ever seen 4 green heater wires coming from the secondary of a PT? If so, what do think the ramifications of that are? is it just 2 pairs of parallel heater wires or could it be two separate coils with their own current specs? Just cant tell so far. Of course I'll get to a voltage check to define thier AC correlation to each other but, its a mystery to me right now.

Your thoughts?

thank you,
Phil D.

There's a schematic here:

http://schems.com/bmampscom/bogner/Alch ... ematic.pdf

it shows the transformers are hammond, and that the 6.5vac xfmr has 4 wires, 1 and 2 connect together, 3 and 4 together. So you're just doubling up the current capacity it seems. (see page 37 for the power supply and heater info)

Yes it's that big, 60 total pages, it has all the silkscreens for the boards etc lol.

Thanks Pompeiisneaks, I do have the Alchemist schematic but wasn't able to make that connection at first. Now I see that.

Just thinking out loud (and it probably doesn't matter), by reading the voltage across the pairs you could determine whether it is two separate coils or, one coil offering 2 wires for each end of the single coil. Ohming it out as well would tell you if its one or two coils. Either way it should have plenty of current capacity for a 6V6 Plexi. The Alchemist had 2 6L6's and six 12ax7's. The plexi with have 2 6V6's and 3 12ax7' so, the PT ought to have tons of breathing room as far as heater current goes. Great! I can breath a little better now.

Thanks for your valuable insights Pompeiisneak! Very helpful

PS - I think its time to start posting photos with posts sometimes, during build processes. Sure clarifies alot.
