Eyelet board tools

Post by pjd3 »

Hello,
I just ordered blank boards, eyelets and an eyelet staking tool from A.P.
Will this be enough to properly stake eyelets or will I require a die to support the eyelets? watched some videos last night and one of the fabric folks were using a die underneath the eyelet while staking. Seemed like a great thing to have but haven’t heard about needing one for amp style boards and never saw those dies on the tube amp parts selling websites.
Will I be ok with just a stake and firm flat table ?

Thanks, looks like fun making your own tube amp eyelet boards.

Yes, you need something under the turret to support without smashing it, while you press with the tool to flange out the bottom of the turret.

Show me what tools you ordered.

I just set the board on a brick, and wack the eyelet tool with a hammer. Not pretty, but I've had no complaints about the appearance yet.

Protect yourself from the stuff that gets airborne when you drill the holes. When you breathe it in, it's a one way trip - it stays in. It's carcinogenic.

What? You didn't get the anvil with the staking tool? Seriously, don't overthink the eyelet part.

I just use a drill press with the staking tool in the top and a bolt I've screwed into the bottom part with a couple nuts so it stays in place. That gives the top of the eylet something to press against and the staking tool comes into the bottom to flare it. I'm just using those typical machinists stake tools, not sure what they're called, but I got one that was about the size of the eyelets and it works a charm.

I also agree, wear lung protection while drilling FR4 it's got a ton of glass shards that come off in a dust that's really bad. Either that, or enjoy your Mesothelioma :D

Thanks folks for the good quick responses,

From Amplified Parts I ordered:

*Fiberboard - Vulcanized 3" x 15" .062" thick (P-HFIBER-A)
*Eyelets - Brass pack of 10 (HEYE-A)
*Staking tool for eyelets and turrets (S-T1715)

I'm not sure why the Staking tool says for "eyelets and turrets". It seems to hold an end shape that would only be meant for flaring out eyelets but,
thats just a visual notion on my part.

And this doesn't have to be beautiful, its for my own projects. If it makes a big difference I'll wait and get the die to support the eyelet before commiting anything to board. But, I'm good using a reasonably decent DIY option if feasible.

And I'll take recommended precautions when drilling these boards (should these vulcanized fiberboards be the ones referred to).

Thanks for your good feedback - just want good results no matter how I do it (and safe results).

Best,
Phil D.

The bottom of the turrets is similar in size/shape to the eyelet, and needs to be flared out to set it into the hole. The top is narrower as you're used to seeing. It should still work either way for either type.

I switched to a very simple and quiet way to install eyelets on the board..
A big plus is that you can install extra eyelets on the finished Board without removing it.

I would definitely love understanding what that is, and how to use it, is it a rivet tool? seems excellent.

Don't laugh, but you can look at Michaels/JoAnn/Hobby Lobby/Tandy Leather for an eyelet staking toolset that includes both the stake and anvil.

I have two drill presses: one is set-up for eyelets and the other drill press is for turrets.

Find them at garage sales etc: perfect if motor is burned out remove it and you got a nice press.

I also have a Fabric store eyelet tool that I use to crimp eyelets when I want to add eyelets to a board already wired.
I do have to lift the board some and place the eyelet.

Yes, it's a rivet tool.

I only slightly modified the end of the bolt, for the contour of the eyelet.

As a pusher I used a rivet's shaft.
Just insert into the hole in the board and and pull until it stops.

oh both very cool, thanks guys, my way works, and I don't have to pay extra, but if I were to do it more than I do, I think I'd definitely get one of those. seems like it would go a lot faster.
