New Build - Chassis Positioning

Post by Littlewyan »

I'm building myself a new amp that has 2 x EL34s and 4 x 12AX7s. It will basically utilises SLO100 topology (4 Gain Stage overdrive channel, Clean/Crunch Channel, Footswitchable channels), but will be using values of my own choosing. I want to shoehorn it into a Marshall 50W Chassis and then into a 1x12 Marshall Combo Cab, which I believe will work, but I'm a bit unsure about spacing.

My plan was to only have 1 Cap Can mounted on top by the PT, then shift the EL34 sockets along one to make room for the extra 12AX7 socket. I've attached a crude chassis drawing to show what I mean.

The only issue I can foresee is heat. I don't think interference will be an issue, but the heat of the PT might affect the EL34 nearest to it. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Or has anyone done this before?

I may also use Cap Cans for the rest of the circuit and mount those in the middle of the chassis, but I haven't decided yet, as I'd rather use individual Filter Capacitors for the different stages.

In terms of heat, I'd be more worried about the cap can being next to the EL34. You want to keep your caps as cool as possible.

Ill check the distance on my current amps with the Caps. I have a few Marshall clones in which the Cap Cans are next to the EL34, so ill measure the distance and be sure to keep it the same on the new amp.

I think I just need to work on the layout inside now and work out how I'm going to fit everything in!

I've seen some tightly packed builds where there was an aluminum shield set up to deflect heat from the cap cans.

Are you building tubes up or down?

I'm also going to be mounting this inside the chassis to power the relays.

It will be by the power switches. So not that far from the Output Circuit really, maybe 5-10cm. Bad idea? Avoid?

I don't imagine it will cause noise by being near the OT.

Sorry, I mean it's actually going to be inside the chassis
