second gen 70's amp with FET sound clip

Post by norburybrook »

thought I'd post this up as people like to actually hear how amps sound.

Second gen amp #40 with the switchable FET boost on the front. Amp was in permanent OD for the rhythm guitars but volume rolled back, bound telecaster with special P90
EVM 12 ported cab mic'd with SM57 and Ribbon.
DR J gtr 1.jpg
lead gtr, FET boost and OD with filtertron bridge.
DR J gtr 2.jpg
unmixed raw demo for upcoming new album later in the year.

Thanks Erwin, I'm really getting like this amp a lot, it's different.

Regarding the recording, well it's my job so I'd better get it right. Actually it's not really mixed properly, as I said it's a rough demo of the tune for the guys in my band.

Tony,

thanks, you were the person who kept me working at liking this amp, I didn't really like it at first, it's taken a while to learn what it does and work with it. I think that's the key, working with it rather than against it. I'd say it needs to be at a certain volume...fairly loud.....before it starts to work. It's definitely a keeper now. Interesting that I tried a few different guitars for the lead part and ended up using that tele with the cheap ebay filtertron in the bridge. THe neck PU is a boutique hand wound filtertron, the bridge PU was a cheap Chinese ebay thing but it fit in the unusual size hole!!!! but it just worked for me in this track, had a 'quack' I liked. :D

@10thTx cheers :D

Congrats on the amp/sound and the nice track.
It still amazes me what these amps can do.

A few days back I did attend a Robben Ford masterclass.
He only had his blond tele with him and was repeatingly complaining about the sound of his rental amp, a Fender Hot Rod Deville or something alike
He was clearly missing his Dumble.
It reminded me why I like buiding/playing these amps :D

Yep! You gotta get those juiced up a bit before they get lively as it's mostly due to the PI heat :D You gotta work a little harder with them but they do reward you.
PI gain from lowest to hottest goes
2nd Gen w/ AT7
4ht Gen ala 102/183 AX
Bluesmaster ala Marshall AX

Tony,

I think I put and AX in to start with and you suggested putting the AT in there and living with it. I think that was one of the first things that hit me after coming from the #102 and probably a big reason I didn't like it immediately. Just goes to show though that living with it for a year now and playing it a lot i've learned how to make it work. As I may have mentioned in another thread I've been running this amp wet/dry which is something that's working well with this amp.

Wow Marcus, I love the tone you are getting. Really nice!

I've said it before but sound clips are REALLY helpful. Thanks for sharing this one!

Cheers Don. I shall do my best to post sound clips of amps when I can. I've done the Tweedle Dee and this amp now so I think I should do the Bluesmaster when I get a chance.
