Need hole through mount 1/4" mono plug

Post by M Fowler »

These are Master Volume box that go in the effects loop of such amps as Blues Deluxe.

I have been using regular 1/4" mono jacks and using the chrome nuts from stripped Fender amps like Deluxe or HRD that use those chrome nuts on the input and effects loop jacks. It is the same thread as the switchcraft 1/4" plugs 5/8 - 27 thread I believe. The large black plastic nuts are the same thread.

But I want some 1/4" plugs with longer threads or made for going in panels.

Like the old EH LPB-1 pedals.

I ordered some 380 switchcraft plugs since they have shorter barrel.

That's really cool, Mark! Very compact.

Just an idea... Have you considered a 5/8"-27 tap? They're pretty cheap on eBay. That cast aluminum box should tap like butter.

I did think about tapping the hole but didn't try it.

I just kept looking for all the nuts I could find around my bench.

Side note: tapping aluminum alloys
I recently had to tap some holes in aluminum-ish stuff. I used all my sly-old-master tricks like chamfering the start of the hole, using lubricant, turning half a turn forward and 1/4 turn back to clear cuttings, delicate "feel" on the tapping handle and so on and found that I wiped the threads off every hole. Well, I did get one good thread, but I think that was Murphy in reverse.
Aluminum alloys seem to work best with two-flute taps with taper-ground entry threads. I bought a batch of taper ground taps and haven't botched one since. The tapering pushes cuttings out ahead of the tap and prevents clogging.

May not be necessary on something as big as 5/8", but may be useful to know.

I don't think 5/8 - 27 is the correct size.

The threads on a Switchcraft 12a jack are 3/8-32. That makes more sense than 5/8" which seems way too big.

Fastenal has a few choices in 3/8-32. There might be one near you. They're pretty good about helping you find what you need.

Thanks guys I figure something out. I shortened the barrels on two of the 1/4" plugs and shortened the ground lead then inserted plastic tube to fasten down the plugs. I was working in very tight space on this aluminum box.

On the larger blue plastic box version I had plenty of room to use chrome nuts from junked Fender amps.
