1st Dumble Amp Build Success

Post by Abe5150 »

Just got done building my first D style amp a 102. Thanks everyone on the Amp Garage for making it happen. This is my first post but i must have read hundreds of them. This amp is my 4th build overall. The solid core wire was a nightmare and the relay circuit was hard to wrap my head around. I haven’t built the footswitch yet, if the manual switches on the back work does that mean the relays are good???

well done :D nice shiny solder joints :D

Yes, if the rear switches are working the relays are working. The tiny pins on those 5 pin din plugs are a PIA for me on the cable ends , I find them really fiddly :D I've taken to hard wiring the foot switch end now!!!!

Really nicely done. Will be using it as one of my references while combing through the somewhat slipshod #102 build acquired late last year.

Best .. Ian

The only D style amps Ive played were a Red Plate Overdrive Classic and a Two Rock TS 1. My amp with only an hour of playing time sort of sounds like the Red Plate. I really didn’t have any expectations I just wanted it to work. From the little playing time with a Strat on clean it definitely has that Dumble sound. So far I didn’t find it too trebly and was surprised by the Mid switch. With the mid and rock switch on it had more of the Dumble character. I got close to making the overdrive sound decent with a Strat but I can tell I need to fiddle with the overdrive trimmer. The Red Plate had a switch for humbuckers and single coils, does anyone know how that works???

My guess is it's a bright switch. Often the bright switch needs to be off for single coils but engaged for humbuckers as they tend to lose some of their high end but have more gain etc.

It's most likely what is referred to here as a "strat switch". It changes the value of the capacitor that is connected to the Mid tone pot. Usually the single coil position is a .047uF cap and the humbucker position is a .01uF cap
