Huh? He hasn't built a triple S?

:o0

I'm a little confused.. a bit shocked.

I know he hasn't. It's a generalization

Plant the seed.. watch them solder. It's that simple.

He simply doesn't need the boldest clean sound on the face of the Earth... so what if it records like the tone is projected from the tenth dimension?

We should make a side bet on how long it takes to see his next project. lol

@MIles, I'm not sure a 150w clean amps records better thank a 50w clean amp or indeed a 15w clean amp :D on stage it's a different matter :D Also getting a chassis for an SSS is hard this side of the pond and I really don't have the facility to make my own.

I do have this though that I built a couple of years ago :D and with the bright switch on, dirty switches engaged(no NFB), and the cut control on full it does a pretty good Mayer/SRV clean. Yes that's a 1960's U67 serial number #113 :D it's kind of the Dumble of microphones :D

@Tony, of course, voltage dividers, makes perfect sense hence the OD not working when I's missed the pot ground. I'm going to drop in those 250k audio taper pots anyway as I don't like the feel of the ones that are in, there's no resistance in them , I like to feel a little resistance turning the knobs :D Alpha pots have a nice feel, hope the CTS ones do too.

I know exatly what I'll be soldering next....I have a Dumbleator to make. I have a small one but want a rack mount :D

Marcus,

I really appreciate your posts on your amp builds! THANK you for taking the time to share your excellent work and guitar playing! It is truly valued.

You've been on a remarkable journey with these D-style builds and it's been of great interest to me to follow your work. Bravo!

And anytime you feel inspired to share more of your superb playing that would be most enjoyable to listen to.

With respect, 10thtx

It’ll be interesting to see what you hear after swapping those two pots. I’d have thought that reducing the load on the preceding stages (with higher resistance pots) would result in reduced distortion content. I’m assuming here that by “gainy” you mean more distorted, at a given level/volume setting. Have you tried turning down the OD entrance trimmer?

I'll save Marcus the trouble as I've changed these pots multiple times. The lower the pot value the more signal you are essentially shunting directly to ground due to the bottom of the pot being grounded. If you lift the ground of the pot what do you get?. More signal thus more gain.

All you guy's took my SSS comment way out of context. It was a JOKE!..

IMO.As far as the OD trimmer goes I usually set it for best frequency response and control the amount of gain with the drive pot. Then control the volume of the OD with the OD Level. But that's me!

Could you not just turn the pot down and reduce the signal going into the following stage? I view the OD trimmer as setting the minimum amount of dirt you get from the drive in OD mode. I think frequency response going into OD1 is mostly about the series resistor feeding the trimmer and and the grid stopper.

Yes you could, however, the frequency response (knee) is still shifted. So you have to think of 2 things when you choose a volume pot?.Signal loss and Knee. So the higher value pot will add low mids (darker). As far as the grid stoppers go I don't think your really altering the sound that much below 220k. If there is? it's minimal 15.5kHz w/68K (in combo w/Miller capacitance).
Personally, I think the 220k grid stopper on V1b and the 220k OD input resistor are there mainly to help keep the low end tight. So it's really everything together. That's what I hear anyway!
I changed this before you read it in my last post so here it is again.
As far as the OD trimmer goes I usually set it for best frequency response (with the tube) and control the amount of gain with the drive pot. Then control the volume of the OD with the OD Level. But that's me!

BTW.This is why (I think) Dumble sets his trimmer rather consistently sets and puts it in the amp. He's setting the frequency response of the OD.Why else would he alter the pot value on 124 and 123?

Thinking about all that...

Marcus is comparing this build to his 102, which has Cl2 LNFB. That surely accounts for some of what he is hearing, don't you think?

Sure maybe somewhat. However, I think the pot value is primarily what he is hearing with reguard to gain IMO.
No LNFB will definitely make the OD more aggressive (Rock) less compressed and loosen the low end!
Depending of course on how he sets the amp.

Here is a chart and discussion of the different pot values and their frequency shifts (1st post)

1 More thing. Here is Matt Rae on 183 in all it's glory! and a good example of it's aggressive snarl due to the added low end especially riding the low notes or the double stops. Gain is set on 4. if you like this (kind of fuzz) sound do the 250K drive and OD Levels disconnect the LNFB and will get you close. 102 has some of this (If you coax it) It's just not as pervasive as 183.IMO

BTW.Some people conflate an aggressive sounding amp with having more gain,
