What do we rate as important in a build?

The arm was impressive and he's a smart guy to work it all out himself. There were a few things I wondered about.

I wondered if he switched the signal from amp to amp or had the signal going to all the amps?

If so, what is the sonic impact of having all the amps facing each other, if all amps have signal is there any cancelation happening?

I wondered if there was an issue with collective hum of the amps being on?

Good quality parts made to the right specs using the right materials will get good results every time, IMO. Of course if no current production equivalent exists, salvaged or NOS is the only option.

I agree you do not need to use NOS parts to get a good sounding amp!.There are plenty of boutique builders out there that make fine sounding amps with new parts available at Mouser.

However if you are going to replicate an amp that was built in the 80's and has many hours on it and want to get as close as possible to capture the sound,feel, personality and nuances of that amp your replicating down to the last 10%. IMO using the same type exact parts can and in most applications will make a noticable difference and get you closer to the amp you are cloning. I'll also say you cannot just change 1 or 2 parts to NOS and expect a big difference you have to full in and go everything!,caps/resistors/seasoned iron/pots any of the parts that affect the sound and feel of an amplifier.
If this was not a site dedicated to replicating Dumble style amps I would not even bring up or recommend using NOS parts (unless you know where they came from) in your amp. Even if you build an amp using all the exact parts Dumble used there is no guarentee that you will like the performance of that amp over one that is built with all new stock parts.In the end it's all still subjective like speakers and cabinets!. You have to either build one or play both side by side and see if you like the results and differences in the parts used in the amp and decide for yourself!.In some cases novice players cannot even tell the difference

This is why I asked Mark if he was talking about building in general or trying to copy a specific amp.Two different ways to approach amp building

Having gone down the NOS parts rabbit hole this is just my opinion!

Thanks for the reply Tony, I thought I read on Facebook, Andy and Jelle saying newly made parts don't sound as good as old parts. Personally, I don't have a lot old parts to build an amp, but I just don't see them making that much change.

Mind you both these guys have a lot more experience than I do.

I think you may have misunderstood the point I was trying to make in my last post so I will break it down simply.

1.Do new parts sound worse than old ones?
NO!!
2.If I am trying to capture the sound and nuances of an existing amp. Do you think using the same parts types in my replica as what is in the original help me to better reproduce that sound..YES!
3.Will my amp sound better if I use NOS parts?
I don't know you tell me!
4 Can everyone tell a difference between an amp built with NOS and new parts..NO!
5. Can I build a great sounding amp using new parts... Absolutely!

I hope this clears up my view on NOS!
