Amp Build: JCM800 2204 HG Jose

Post by FourT6and2 »

Just finished this one. A bit different from my previous builds. No bright switches. No era/clipping switch. A few tweaks here and there. NOS parts for the unicorn fart dust.

Sounds good through my headphones, but not so much through laptop speakers. Let me know what y'all think.

Thanks!

You know, they aren't hard to find. There's like 1,000 of them on eBay.

It sounds terrible and it looks worse!! It looks just awful!! OMG I already have a name for it.. poor thing.

Travesty.

You should stip it and make something better... hold on..

Ok, it is startng to grow on me. Maybe this is an aquired taste thing. Yes. It looks ok.. it sounds pretty good.. gimme a minute..

Pretty much done. Added in a voltage divider on Gain 1 and a rotary switch with a bunch of clipping options.

Beautiful build! Could you show the switching clipping setup, I'd be interested to see what you have there. Is it different types of clipping diodes or?

Yeah. It's a make-before-break rotary switch (Alpha). I've got 20v zeners, 18v zeners, MPSA06 transistors, 2N5401 transistors, and 5v zeners.

I used same switch nearly same selections on an amp, the one I put a 25k ground lift on.. have you tried that? I think I limited it to 15k and I call it "Squash".

Your work is excellent. Really nice amp.

Not sure what you mean by the 25K ground lift. Can you be more specific?

Wire a small pot like 10k backwards and the wiper takes the place of the ground wire for your coipper array. The less the resistance the lighter the clipper effect, Putting a maybe 120-220p over that pot also dials out fizz so yiu can find a sweet spot balance for highs and drive with any normal preamp gain setting. That is what I call Squash.

About 15-17 k gets you completely out of the audible clipping.
