Hmmmm.....Where to order?

Post by mchauck »

OK guys (and perhaps gals, too) I have coaxed the little woman into buying me my Express iron for Christmas. A real coup don't ya know!

So, I would like to order as much of the other stuff as possible (resistors, caps, pots, etc.) from one supplier and then get the rest elsewhere. I am a bit confused as to where to go. For example, I need to order 18 min. filter caps from Mouser (Mallory 20s or 40s @ 450v) or I can get Atoms each from another company, but they don't carry xicon resistors etc. They sell alpha pots at Mouser, but lots of folks here I notice like other brands.

In the past, I have made due with what I could get at the local RS or at Apex Surplus (which is local for me) But if you have ever been to Apex, it is certainly a chore to find what you need sometimes, albeit a blast to look. This time, I would like to get the "right" stuff and get as close to a Wreck Sound as I personally can get.

What is your advice, oh magic 8 ball?

C E Distribution is good. They have Hammond iron but no chassis. They stock most everything else.

CE Distribution is the wholesale arm of AES. They (CE) will ask for proof of business.

Well, although I am a business, I don't qualify under the electronics umbrella. Allynmey doesn't carry all the caps nor the resistors. In fact, there seems to be nowhere to one-stop-shop. Oh well, I guess I'll rev up the ol' keyboard and get busy.

How essential are the Mallory electrolytics? Would the equivalent Atom caps sound any worse?

Both are overpriced US made caps nothing more. I mean to say IMO none of us could hear the difference in a blindfold comparison. The thing is, both the Trainwreck & the Komet I'm lashing together require them in terms of esthetics. Hell, they take up more "real estate" than any other cap save for the big Solens. At least with the Solens, they'll never rupture and they come with a sort of pedigree. That is to say, the audio cogniscenti approve of 'em. I used them in a 100W Traynor and the 30uf @ 450VDC were 2 1/8 " in diameter! But it was smooth like "buttah" and delivered monsterous plate voltages without a whimper. I am prepared to bite the bullet and buy a crap load if someone wants to share the cost.
