Started DClone

Post by Blues Hound »

Well, I have started my DClone based on the Bassman DClone Norm did.

PT and OT are MM Blackface Bassman Iron.

Here is a pic of the chassis and board:

Clean work. Looks like you've done this before. Good luck at the spark test! Skip

That looks great! I'm close to finishing my ODS in a Fender chassis...mine doesn't look anywhere near that nice.

I thought I read that wrapping the cathode wire for the first triode on V1 and V2 'around' the socket such that it approaches the board adjacent to the plate/cathode wires for the second triode was important. I have no idea how important it is...but I'm almost sure I read that. Just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for the kind words... :)

I have built a TW Clone that I am very happy with and I just put a 4x10 cab together with 4 Sumback speakers in it for th TW Clone.

I am slowly finishing this project, and it will be a 4x10 combo with reverb.

More pics to follow as I plod along.

Did you use a doghouse for your filter caps?

Structo: Yes, as I am using a Fender chassis and it seems the easiest way to go.

Steve,

Nice clean build!

One niggle though...those solder joints for the b+ feeds into the preamp board scare the shit out of me. I would personally make a good mechanical connection at those points, then solder.

Again, a great build!

I agree, laying a wire on a turrett is not real solid. Other than that the build looks really nice.

One hint for tone. On V2 Dumble always has the plate and cathode leads running parallel touching. Apparently he's creating some kind of capacitance or inductance with this. I've found it really does make a difference.

Nice work. I'm wondering, why did you shield the OD Level, Volume and Master Volume wires?

Also, was this a blank Fender style chassis? Really looks nice! Reverb???

markmalin: Yes, it was a Fender Chassis and yes, it has reverb. For the most part I followed Norm's Bassman Clone and made a few changes.

Bob-I: Do you mean all four wires should be bundled together until they get to the Board? If so, then I will have to replace all four wires.

Update: I changed all of the RN65 resistors to 100K across the board, even the 150K to the mid cap, and it sounds really great...Thanks Gil... :) Your thread helped tremendously, and the caps on CL1 & 2 are now 10uf, kept the caps on OD1 & 2 at 4.7uf.

I also changed the .01 cap at OD1 to a MMP from PVC and the .001 Cap on the Bass Pot is also now a MMP.

This amp is not a high gain amp, defiantly Low gain. I will have to see how it takes a pedal, I have a Klon Centar, an old MXR Distortion + and a Keeley modded Blues Driver BD-2. I will have to see which combination works best.

Once again, thanks to Norm and Gil for their help and to this great site.

Yes, like this...

Notice the yellow and brown wires on V1 and V2. In my testing the biggest tonal difference is on V2.

Also, I see a few more places where you've tacked the wires on to the side of a turrett. Wrap that wire and solder it correctly so you don't have a failure or increased resistance from a poor connection.
