I must have done something right!

Post by Buschman »

I fired up my first Express build this afternoon. It was a great finish for a two week vacation. It was not trouble free. I had soldered one of the PT secondary leads to the bias feed terminal. It fried one of the bias caps. After repairing that, I was able to play my new amp.

WOW, I am very impressed. I fully expected a harsh, buzzy & hard to play amp after all of the post I had read. This thing is buttery. It is also very quiet. I had a hum but it was a bad tube in v2. The hiss is very tollerable. Yes it is loud but it sounds great at low volume. There is nothing harsh about it. Maybe it is the PS sprauges that I used. I did not put the bright switch in but probably will have to. I haven't wired in the cut control that I've installed but I do not need it. I like it-very musical! I do think it will become my GO-TO amp.

Thanks for Amp Garage!

I'm new to this side of the forum. Tell me more about the "cut" switch please.

It's much like the cut pot on a Vox ac30. It deadens some of the highs. I went ahead & wired mine up. It might come in handy with some ceramic pickups. Do a search on the Astroid or Komet layouts to see how it looks.

I have tried to put a triode switch in this amp & cannot get it to behave. I got the schematic from the tone lounge. Have any of you played with the triode switch??

V1 is a bit picky isn't it.

I will try to post pics tomorrow when I am on broadband.

Buschman I expected the same thing when I got my clone and I had a similar experience turning it on.

I needed toast; it was so buttery.

I finally had time to sort out the triode/pentode switch. I had crossed up some wires. Guys this is a very usable mod that knocks off some volume. I deadens the brilliance a bit. I am not sure what it does to the bias or how it works on 6v6s but I think it will be usable sometimes. I am gigging Saturday night & hope to use the thing for 4 hours.

Since I had a bad octet socket in my Ceriatone kit (pin 4 missing the solder lug), Nik is being quick to send me out a replacement...I asked about any other mods he might send along, and he told me about the triode mod. I quickly sent him a couple bux Pay Pal for the parts.

Anything to tame some volume! Damn this thing is loud! And being such a sentive and dynamic amp, all my neighbors now know how poorly I play guitar! LOL :)

Triode mode + Air Brake + Green Backs (or Scumback clones technically) are my goals to try and tame the volume a bit without killing the tone.

Make yourself a less than perfect speaker isolation box. Then, you can hear it and they can't :D Besides, I'll bet you play better than they do 8)

Somehow...I don't think they care....

I hope to be moving into a house in the next six months. I'm going to have an Isolation ROOM! (assuming the house has a basement....)
