7-pin counterparts to standard preamp tubes

Post by JoeTele »

I've been delving deeper into all things tube and am noticing that that prices on some of the 7-pin "versions" of our favorite preamp tubes are often much cheaper than the 9-pins, including NOS Mullard, etc. Long story short, would 2 mullard 6AV6/EBC91's be equal or near to 1 Mullard ECC83/12AX7 regarding all of the properties that make the 9-pin Mullard so desirable? Any strong cons of going down this road (would all be for personal use/gain so no profit motive, resale value concern, etc).

Thanks as always!

If you can get them, IMO, there is every reason to use them. Just remember that you need twice as many sockets and 0.3A for each tube filament. This means a bigger transformer and a more crowded or larger chassis.
