Superdrive 22 build

Post by Smokebreak »

I had an extra 12.5 x 6.5 chassis wired up for a different amp I do for folks from time to time and have decided to do a 6v6 Naylor type Superdrive in it instead, but with the hi/lo on a switch instead of different inputs.
The eyelet board I'll use is for the other amp, so it'll be a bit wonky, but I always have fun putting squares in circle holes. The amp it should be is kinda a tweed thing with trem and verb, so the control layout is funky, too.
It will drive me mad to not have the treble/mid/bass controls equidistant, so I'll group the bass/treb and then presence/girth(??instead of mid) ;)
The EL34 Naylor I built a few years ago is long gone, and I've always kinda missed that amp, then I saw a player the other night on a Buddha SD, and it sounded so nice. It wasn't even a rock band, kinda singer songwriter stuff but sounded superb with a tele.
The Buddha is close to the Naylor except the PI, so what the heck. I've got a GZ34 spot too, so I'll use it.
It'll have the dual ganged pots, and should be a great clean/plexi type, as well as a rocker.

I can't wait to hear this. The SD60 is an awesome amp!

This goes pretty quickly when the chassis work is done :P
Had to get a little creative with the board, which I designed for a cathodyne PI amongst other things. It's kind of amazing though to see what little space a "high gain amp" takes up on a board when you're constrained. Hell I could've fit reverb in there if I had another pre socket.
I screwed up a Mouser order a while back and got these skyscraper 33u caps, but turns out I love them, and since found some nice 22u radials that are shorter, and smaller(that I have now run out of). They are nice and cheap too.
I stuffed the boards with some random stuff I had. No rhyme or reason for any of it. I might put a slope control there on the tone stack.

Smoke: no one says those caps have to stand up. You can lie them down and call them hot dogs. Nice looking build.

Haha true, true! The space saving aspect has made me a believer though when upright. I've been wasting so much space above the board in all my previous builds !

Yup! I was just editing a schematic to share. I fired it up last night, and the presence was causing oscillations, but not of the garden variety whistling when the plates need reversing. Of course it crossed my mind but I rebuilt it 3 ways till I finally reversed my wires and all was well ;)

Amp sounds killer. The lo gain was pretty great off the bat, and the high gain was a bit too articulate/bright/tight/thin for my taste. Killer for searing shreddy leads with a LP, but I prefer things a little more thick/classic. So the Rp on the 1st stage got a cap and the first stage coupler got bumped to 22n, and I removed one of the peakers before the first gain pot. This suits my ears better. I'll probably put the bright cap on a switch, too.

I'll get some pics up and hopefully clips once I get it pretty again. There's crap flying around everywhere now;) I gotta get through this weekend first..Here's the last couple I took before I wired up the panel.

I'm diggin it so far, an it's reminding me of my old El34 build. Same ballpark.
PT is a CT 40-18085, OT is deluxe iron, 6K6 CT 40-18002

This OT sounds great in a lot of different applications btw. Can't beat it for $30

That sounds right up my alley!

Can I ask where you source your components from?

I have been (in my illustrious 1 amp career)getting things from Hoffman. I've gotten great service from him and The EL34 forum was an essential part of my not blowing stuff up.
I haven't yet ordered a chassis and have only use Classictone for trannies.

My apologies if this is a sticky somewhere that i haven't noticed.

I'm torn now on a next build - Kit or Creative!?!?

I started with an AX84 kit, then a Weber Plexi and Orange kit, then went commando and started sourcing everything, punching chassis myself, and drilling/installing eyelet boards. I think everyone gets to a place where you figure out what things you like to do, and what things you don't, and what you don't mind paying a little extra for.
Of course every project is different, perhaps fueled by the fact that this can become an expensive hobby. You can always find broken tube stuff locally or on ebay. Some guys turn it into a business, which feeds the demon, and creates a little cash too!

Anyways, here's so info on ground up builds. I encourage any other members to post their sourcings as well.

Ken at Watts Audio has some nice blank chassis. https://tubeamplifierparts.com/
He has a lot of different sizes and will also get them custom cut on larger orders. If you want to cut it yourself, get some Greenlee punches and/or some step bits. I use Inkscape for all my layouts/designing/boards, as well as faceplates.

I prefer using eyelet boards, and get them from Doug Hoffman. Sometimes I stake them myself, and sometimes he does them for me. As you know, Doug's customer service and work is second to none. You can get eyelets at Mouser.

Speaking of Mouser, if you take the time to sort through and get to know the website, that's your best best on cheap resistors and pots, as well as radial caps, and sometimes odd transformers. For general purpose resistors, I like the 1W carbon films.

Antique Electronic Supply has a lot of stuff. If you can prove you have a business, you can apply for their wholesale side, which is CE Distribution, and lots of stuff is discounted in bulk. Tube Depot also has some good deals on some stuff if you buy in bulk IIRC

Steve at APex Jr. has a lot of neat stuff and he's fun to talk to as well. I get a lot of wire and e-caps from him.

Tubes are hit or miss for me. Just when I think I find a vendor that is sending me great batches, I get duds. I send them back when that happens and voice my displeasure! Ultimately I think it puts pressure on everyone down the line to produce a better product.

If you want specialty components, say mustard caps or old 6PS caps, or whatever, you can always post here, and the vendors that post on this forum will find you, or you can scour ebay. All that stuff is out their, at a price.

Classictone has good stuff, as does Hammond, and MAtt at Musical Power Supplies is doing some cool stuff at great prices. There's Heyboer, Mercury Magnetics, too, at a cost. Some of these guys will do custom winds, too.

I prefer the 120V lamps, and get them from Newark, who also has a lot of stuff.

Ebay is good when you need that one 500K dual gang pot that you forgot to freaking order from CED!!

Hope that helps I think the first non-kit I did was a 2x6V6 Rocket that I did my own chassis and boards for. I sold it and got a CEDist account ;)

Muchos Gracias! That is a whole bunch of useful starting points for me.
AES looks like they have a ton of good stuff.

I really would like to build a Wreck with VVR. I always go back to my Liverpool no matter what type of band I'm in and have gotten very accustomed to using single channel amps and the guitar volume.

I am thinking an SE KT88 build might be a fun project.
