PSA - Jazz Mode Rocks!

Post by aflynt »

I've been gone for a while, but I figured I'd post this in case anyone, like myself, had been avoiding exploring Jazz mode on ODS variants due to being initially underwhelmed by it. A few weeks a go I was messing around with my rig before a job and decided to try Jazz mode again on my low-plate, all-in-one, 102ish build. I wanted more grit on the clean side so I ran it with volume 1 high - 8, mid high - 8, and the D'Lator send high - 8 (seeing a pattern?). This brought the gain structure up even higher than it was when I used to run the amp when in "Rock" mode and now I get this amazing semi-clean sustained shimmery sound on clean and more harmonics on the OD channel. Amazingly inspiring sound to play.

I hadn't really messed around with that configuration much before due to the built in Reverb in my amp (Belton brick based) not being able to handle the hotter preamp gain. I wound up just running all my effects (including reverb) in front of the amp and backing off the levels a lot. Delay and Reverb are much less polite sounding, but ironically more inspiring to play due to them being more responsive to pick dynamics.

Anyway, my "proof":

P.S. - is the malware flagging thing ever going to get fixed with the BBS software here?

Nice sounds you've got there Aron! Your obvious love to guitar playing (as per your footage) doesn't hurt either :-)

My lowplate also tend to get brighter once I run the volume 1 high (8ish), but when I built in the D-lator I, like many, replaced the master with fixed resistors and have placed the d-later return in the original master slot. However, maybe I should take out the resistor network and put in a trimmer to see if I can get a little more tone with the (original) master run a little higher.

Your setup sounds very nice.

Thanks guys!

bluesfendermanblues: My amp is also set up with a fixed resistor network in place of the master - 560k series 470k to ground. I'm running the post cf send in the dlator circuit pretty hot though - 8. That actually generates a wee bit of OD from the recovery circuit. It compresses and feels like a cranked amp even with the "Master" (D'Lator return) down low. I've also ditched the LNFB on the recovery circuit so that makes it a bit more dynamic and less clean.
