'64 BF Twin Reverb Rebuild Questions

Post by dorrisant »

I have a rust bucket here for a rebuild... see pics of chassis below. I need all new parts for the chassis. TXs are good yet crusty... board is conductive. I ordered new hardware for everything. Owner wants a 15". I was thinking of the Eminence 15" Kappa Pro 15A 500W. This is gonna be a steel guitarist's amp so any direction is appreciated.

Anyways... just wondering if anyone knows what part number for the proper grill cloth at CED/AES? This amp has replacement cloth. Does S-G501 look right?

If not there then where?

Were there any variations?

I have a Bassman that looked like that at one time and today it works fine but for needing a new PT, even all the pots where good and even the tube sockets , man was I shocked to find all that good!

I stripped it all out used a muratic acid wash to null the rust a good amount and then used Pernatex brand rust converter to prime and seal the chassis .

Your gonna have to change out that OT even if it's good to match up with a 8 ohm driver as the stock OT wants a 4 ohm load!

The Kappa pro Only goes up to 4 kHz , I would go with a EV 15L and hope the guy has a hand cart and a strong back to move the amp around , lol!

Keep popping up more photos as you progress with its rebirth!

I just noticed the impedance mismatch too... more searching. I don't want to change the OT.

Good tips on the rust, gonna do all that.

Also getting removable casters so it can be moved a little easier.

More pics to follow soon.

Found info about this one on a steel guitar forum.... Eminence Patriot 15" EPS-15C 4Ω 300 watts. Sounds like a winner and it is lightweight!

Does it really make economic sense to try to rehab that chassis?

Not my choice... I bid it high and the customer wants it. Maybe for sentimental reasons. He is a great player and knows the value.

try a telonics 15", it's a 4 ohms neo speaker, reminiscent of a jbl k130, which should be great for steel

Yes Telonics speakers and Jupiter speakers are used by Milkman Amps and others for pedal steel guitars due to light weight and sound quality.

If you can pry the guys wallet open a bit more than a new OT that is interleaved wound, it's worth every penny!
Just keep this in mind, on OTs that are not interleave wound every time you step up to running a higher impeadance tap on the secondary side the amp will sound better by 1/3rd!
On interleaved ones the betterment in sound is only 7% per tap!

Steve, can you elaborate on how you get to this conclusion?

I just had a look at the Telonics website. I'm not a big fan of companies that don't post their prices, but make you contact them to ask for pricing. As far as I'm concerned, they might as well just say "Don't bother, kid, you can't afford it. I am lazily looking for a 15" speaker for my current (of the last two years) build. I currently have a freshly reconed JBL D-130 waiting in the wings, but I have a feeling a quad of 6V6's in class AB2 is going to be too stressful for that speaker. Eminence has some interesting looking sub-$100 15's, may gomthat way.

Please correct me if I am off base here , but would it not be safe to conclude that since every step up in secondary winding impeadance is about 1/3rd more windings that your getting greater coupling to the primary winding , and this greater coupling makes for better responce and in turn tone?

Very interesting concept Steve, I'm pulling up a chair.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ordered the one I mentioned from above before the Tropics or Jupiters were mentioned.

Hope that works out... at least it should be lighter than the two original ceramic 12"s. Plus it was only $165 w/shipping...
