Looks like I will be helping a buddy of mine build an amp, and one possible choice is a 5F6A. The other is an amp I designed.
The big advantage to a 5F6A is that you can buy all the crap in one box, from Mojotone or whoever, and you don't have to make anything up.
Question: is there a 5F6A kit out there that will allow you to move the transformers around enough to do the headphone test? I don't want him to be locked into chassis holes that force the amp to hum.

Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.

The whole premise behind a 5F6A kit is mimic the Tweed narrow chassis amp. Thus, that is the given footprint that you will have to work with. However, there is no reason why you could not package the same circuit in a JTM45 package. Also, Mojo has blackface and brown face kits I believe. The New Steve H wrote:Looks like I will be helping a buddy of mine build an amp, and one possible choice is a 5F6A. BTW, thousands of clone amps have been built in the narrow chassis that don't have a problem with hum.

Right; I should have mentioned the JTM45. I just want a little room to wiggle things around.

I've got a jmp chassis setting here. I cut the holes for up right transformers but th a doesn't mean you have to use them.

I also built a 5f6a/jtm45 into a trainwreck sized blank with no problem at all.

You'll only get hum if you screw it up in which case you get to unscrew it, and transformer coupling will probably not be the cause. This thing is so tried and true and w/ a kit if you follow in others footsteps I don't think you can miss. The problems come when you hike off-trail.ToneMerc wrote:BTW, thousands of clone amps have been built in the narrow chassis that don't have a problem with hum.TM
Squeal w/ everything on 10 or jumpered is an other matter, practically endemic, there you need to pay attention, read up. Make sure you use the 9pin sockets that allow for shields.
IIRC Mojo, or someone, makes JTM45/5F6A chassis only partially drilled, just the cutout for laydown PT?
