Does anyone have any sound clips of a 80 watt express? I know there is a link to a guys myspace way back in this thread but it's hard to tell what's going on in those tunes.
cheers

Hi.
Any updates about a TW 80W building?
It seems that I'll maybe got to build one for a buddy. I think it's a bit crazy but he tours a lot in the stoner/sludge scene and big bad amps are common in this musical area

Just make sure your lead dress is really good. I could not control an oscillation I was getting but Allynmey did a great job on his build.

I turned mine into a Rocket.

Did you maintain the 4*EL34 100W for you rocket or did you go for a 4*EL84 as originally used into this one?

ATM we're discussing what we're gonna build for the dude, frankly, I'd prefer if he goes for a 40W and compensating by using high sensitivity speakers (EVM12Ls, Wizards...).
For now, would it be he 80W or another one, I'm a bit puzzled about what to use as trannies and caps, especially considering that here in Europa, we're not as nicely supllied as in the US to build tubeys.
I think I'll have to make an OT come from the US, not totally certain if I must go for Pacific, Heyboer or Edcor and probably get a PT custom wired locally, about the caps, the dilemma is even harder : no traces of Mallory PVC at any supplier I'm in contact, but I can get easyly Sprague 730P, 716P, 715P, 225P, Mallory 150, Sozo, Jupiter, TAD vintage oil, Cornell DME, SCR, Solen, Wima, Xicon, Evox Rifa, Roederstein, Panasonic or hardcore expensive Hovland, Auricap, Munsdorf, Alessandro, Psvane.
Generally, I got no problems selecting caps but again, getting interesed in TW building is puzzling me, especially I've got to consider that the buddy plays a baryton guitar and by reading the topics, it seems that TW often go muddy in bass sounds, which is not an option for the buddy (lotsa semi-pro touring, mostly festivals or clubs in all Europa, even Russia and some movings to Maghreb like Algeria).
Maybe should I go to my habitual 716P (or go for the TAD vintage oil?)+silver mica use, or should I go for smth else? Maybe put the heaters in 12.6V DC to as in the CAE amps?

Frankly, it's the 1st time I really don't know what I really have to do for getting the best results at building a tubey and I got to count in that it has to be a touring amp for pro use an that the buddy is not a rockstar but a young hard workin musician so there's no infinite money to put in testing lotsa parts

I used 4 EL34 power section and added reverb when I converted to Rocket.

Make it easy on your self and go with M150 caps. I would change the presence circuit to a more stable one.

I used 600vct 400mA PT and 3k3 OT 100w rated. (Edcor) The amp isn't much louder then the stock Express. I would use Marshall Plexi iron or similar available iron to get 80 to 100w if I were you.

Funny fact : I was just thinking to ask the buddy if it could please him if we were using plexi trannies and tought about M150 as I usually use 'em to re-cap Plexies and JCM800s! (I begin to regret having sold my 1972 Drake OT last year  )
In fact, he primarily tought of a customised Marsh then heard TW U-tube clips on a forum (and well, I taught they sounded great too!)

Watcha d'ya think about for a more stable presence circuit on it?

I switched to using the Presonance circuit Martin Manning and others have been posting about in the TW section.

The Express has it's roots in the Marshall venue.

Yes that's the discussion and there were variations of the circuit, works great on my 50w Express.

I'm tempted to build an 80w or 120w express if I can find the right iron (2k2 or 3k3 Z)

Norska, Welcome to the TAG forum. I built an amp this past year that was essentially an oversized Trainwreck Rocket. Not really the high gain monster Express but I did use a lot of Trainwreck parts and borrowed heavily from the layout. I had initially intended to build a large Express but decided I would never need that kind of power so i chose to use use the parts to build a bass amp... it is documented here: http://diyguitaramps.prophpbb.com/topic26.html

I will build one and see if rj has any of his Streaker chassis left to start with.

Would have to figure out where to add that 4th octal tube socket hole :)

Otherwise, it's drill and punch time.
