Komet Concorde, Power tube swaps
Hey guys.... I'm a guitar luthier, Tech, Player.... I can fix a guitar, but ignorant on my amps... needs some basics...
Could I swap different power tubes in my concorde? KT66's? ect.?
out of all the new el34's out there, I like the svet winged c's the best, but wouldn't mind trying something else without mods.
Thanks in advancement.
Jay

Re: Komet Concorde, Power tube swaps
sure----just pick your favorite pair and rebias---there should be ample play in the bias supply pot without having to change out the 39k resistor. if you like the sed el34's you should try their 6l6's in there---i like those myself. kt66's would be fine as well, or the new jj kt77's----i like those as well. rhmurkat wrote:Hey guys.... Re: Komet Concorde, Power tube swaps
A few people have posted that they like the NOS Tesla (not JJ) EL-34's even the GTel34M's also have been mentioned. I'm finally making myself a Koncorde/KF-50 this weekend. Hope to have it fired up by Monday. I have all of the above tubes including some XF2' and XF4's to try in it! I'll report back.
This one will have the switching/footswitch system for the Fast/Gradual switch that Komet should have built it with. That switch is useless in a gig recording situation since you have to reach around a hot amp on a dark stage and switch it during a song??????
This will have a SS switch with no pop and a footswitch thanks to UR12

Cool! I just start with almost nothing on the bias and gradually turn it up on the pair of tubes till there at 30ma ish? with no ill effect, correct?rhinson wrote:sure----just pick your favorite pair and rebias---there should be ample play in the bias supply pot without having to change out the 39k resistor. if you like the sed el34's you should try their 6l6's in there---i like those myself. kt66's would be fine as well, or the new jj kt77's----i like those as well. rhmurkat wrote:Hey guys.... Once, I put a pair of JJ's el34''s in and caught them prior to meltdown, gave me a little wtf sensation.... took them back to the retailer. But I would like to try other types in there, the amp is actually can handle others while being touted built for el34's huh? Go ahead, get technical on me... I need the education

Now that would be a nice addition. (jealous)Allynmey wrote:This one will have the switching/footswitch system for the Fast/Gradual switch that Komet should have built it with. Re: Komet Concorde, Power tube swaps
put the amp on standby and put in your 6l6 type tubes. turn on your multimeter and read the voltage on either pin 5-----if it's below -50v turn the pot till your above that-------maybe -53 or so. this will insure you 6l6's won't be drawing too much current when turned on. then since this amp will probably put them in the 480 - 490v range on the plates, 30ma is about the most i'd let them draw---obviously checking/adjusting that with the 1 ohm cathode resistors provided in the amp. rhmurkat wrote:Cool! Re: Komet Concorde, Power tube swaps
I've searched but no find, are there any sound clip's of the Komet posted ?
Thank's,

Re: Komet Concorde, Power tube swaps
I don't know why everyone is so infatuated with sound clips. There are so many variables involved. A good musician can coax tones out of an amp that I wouldn't have thought possible, any hack engineer can tweak a clip into just about anything.Johnhenry wrote:I've searched but no find, are there any sound clip's of the Komet posted ?

There's no way a clip represents what you are going to sound like playing your guitar through that amp. Not unless the clip is recorded with a similar guitar (to yours) with similar pickups by a guy with a similar style in a room similar to the one you play in with the same mic you use onstage with a similar signal path back to the recording device.
YouTube is even funnier. Pre-cable and living in a valley we got two network broadcast channels plus PBS, now we have a choice of two or three hundred channels of crap either on cable or from the little dish. Do I really want to watch nine minutes of commercials before the station cuts back to the infomercial they're passing off as a program?!
At least commercials generally exhibit a high level of production value believe it or not. It's like having only four bars for your solo, you better make every note count. If you only get 30 seconds and you're pouring literally millions into the production and buying air time you betcha it's gonna be a slick little production. Which is a higher compliment than I can pay YouTube...

Case in point: Some Nashville session guy can get tones out of an AC30 or a DC30 that no way no how resemble what I sound like even if I play their guitar through their amp.
Years ago I used to go to Sam Ash and check out all the killer gear that was in the "used" section in near mint condition. (Time capsule: The Sam Ash keyboard shop used to be between a parking garage and We Buy Guitars, Rudy's was on the other side of We Buy Guitars. The Sam Ash guitar and bass store was across the street next to Manny's.) Some kid who learned to play a month ago would trade in a Marshall stack and a white Les Paul every other day because he didn't sound like Randy Rhoads. These days you can go out and buy Digitech "Clapton in a box" or "Hendrix in a box" but still, if your touch and your timing isn't right it isn't going to sound the same.
Re: Komet Concorde, Power tube swaps
You've got the right ideas's Muchxs, I'll tell on myself now, I started playin when i was 12, My mom's band, I bought my first new Strat from Manny's Mail order in 1970, I was 23, and i still own it, bought a 1969 plexi from Mel Bay's in 1970, Still own it, I quit playing in 1978, I've worked on amp's all my life, but I'm still learning, I ran my own shop until 2 yr's ago, I'm retired and to old to Cut the Mustard anymore !
but i think the internet is the greatest thing to come along, you get to share other people's idea's and experience's.
I gotta get ready to go to a Benefit this afternoon and a lot of the people i've worked for will be there today, I'm lookin forward to seeing them.
Thank's for your info.
