Do NOT seek to imitate the Master...

Post by Normster »

...Seek what the Master sought.
(I think I heard that on an episode of Kung Fu in the 70s. :) )

Anyway, I thought I'd raise a little rabble by starting a discussion about your philosphy of Dumble amp building. It occurred to me that the more we try to imitate Dumble, the further we are from actually nailing the tone.

I've built 5 clones so far and each of them sounds different. In particular, I built 2 identical clones into Bassman donors that should sound the same but are entirely different. Different iron maybe, certainly tolerance stackup on components, but the difference is very distinct. The biggest problem is that I built one for a friend who prefers the sound of mine over his. :(

My point is that part of the joy of building for me is not necessarily "nailing" a particular tone, but in discovering the unique voice of each amp I build. My latest build is more of a '70s replica than a clone and is very raw sounding. Not nearly as smooth as my other amps, but I'm really starting to dig the edge on the tone. It'll never do fusion, but it kills for blues.

Sooo...do you build and tweak with a tone in mind or do you try to bring out the best in the iron and tubes at hand?

Your goals are much loftier than mine:) My first goal is to have the first turn on not create sparks or smoke... then make noise that sounds like a guitar... hell after that is all bonus:)

definitely after a "tone" signature.

this build is the result of listening to Robben a LOT. After building 6 other DIY amps I lusted after the glassy cleans and creamy ODs.
Plus a lot of help from dogears and Bob-I with suggested schematic and component value tweaks

Luckily thats how its sounds !!

Sadly I just checked how much a TC Electronics 2290 rack unit is for the effects loop - dont think I'll be building one of those

will have to stick to the Boss RV and delay pedals for now but thinking of selling my Virus C to pay for decent guitar outboard gear.

I built all my own booster and OD pedals for the same reasons - searching for specific tones.

Next major tweak is dumbleator inside my new build for the effects loop.

cheers

I always tweak each amp individually. They are all slightly different.

Right on Norm!

I build them because I've had a particular Sound in my head since I was about 14, the Dumbles I've heard are the closest thing to it. I'm certainly not out to "Nail Robben's tone" but I like the sounds he gets. I like the sounds Larry and Sonny get as well, all totally different, all Dumble. The only way you can tweak your amp to nail a particular players tone is to have that player play through your gear!

I Built an amp with two channels a year ago. Today, I still tweak. The amp still gets better everytime. Play it for a while, with the band. Tweak it. Play again. And so on. The Dirt channel is far from a Dumble but it sure nails some of those tones.

I build these things because I wish I were Stanley Turrentine or Sonny Rollins or John Coltrane.

I have to admit, I built my first clone because I wanted to sound like Scott Lerner. :) I was disappointed with my first build because the tone was horrible so I tore it back down to the bare chassis and did it over again using different layout and values. The result wasn't much better, but I did notice some things the amp did pretty well. I tweaked it to enhance those things.

The lesson for me was to treat every amp as having its own voice that just needs a little TLC to bring out its best. I also learn something from each build that I usually go back and try on previous builds. I suppose that with a few more years of experience under my belt, I'll actually know how to voice an amp. For now I'll take what I can get. :)

Big ups!! Me too! I wanted play like Trane, Miles, Rollins, Joe Henderson, Shorter, Zawinal, Brecker, etc....

I have heard you play Ben. You need to hit me with more tasty stuff! The last clip was terrific.

I know I'm in trouble now cause it's more fun to build and tweak them than it is to practice. Since I need the practice waaay more, maybe that's why they don't sound like dogears amps!!! I better go tweak now.
