My first DIY tube amp

Post by DWBH »

Hi fellows!

I'm new to this thing of tube amps. I've never built one, though I've been dealing with stomps for about a year or so.

So I was thinking of building one next year, perhaps. I'm looking for a simple amp with lots of headroom. It's kind of contradictory, 'cause only a 100watts can handle lots of headroom. Nonetheless, what's the amp with lots of headroom, but simple as well? I like the clean of the Bassman, for instance. I also like the clean of the Blackface era Fender amps, but they seem a bit cold and harsh to me. Not saying it sucks, but I like a hot clean, with a bit of more body, if you know what I mean.

Oh, and what books do you suggest me reading, about tube amp construction?

Thanks,
André

PS: I have a Carvin Belair schem, and I was thinking of extracting the clean channel schem from it, but I don't know if it'll worth the trouble, since I'm still a noob.

A 'wreck can be a real son-of-a-gun to tame. You can learn a lot by going over to AX84.com, hosted by Doberman Amps. They can set you up with a basic kit, a P1, sort of like a Champ. Two tubes and a decent amount of clean. There are several other kits there as well, but it sounds like the P1 would fit pretty good.

Hope this helps.
