impedance matching

Post by JoshBernstein »

Hi,
I just recently finished a tweed champ build and i have a question. The ot i have in it has a single 4 ohm tap. Is it possible to run it through a single 8 ohm speaker? Would it damage the amp? Could i play it through the 8 ohm speaker for an hour set without any issues?
Thanks,
Josh

Most amps can tolerate a 100% mismatch. I would not worry about an 8Ω speaker on a 4Ω tap.

I would be worried about that power cord though!

Note that you will loose 1/3rd of the wattage output that the amp has when you step up or down from that 4 ohm match and you will likely hear a reduction in the amps low end frequency responce running that 8 ohm load.
