music and life

Post by stretch2011 »

Since my sons been born I have no really had time to play music. I've set aside time but as of lately I havnt gotten the chance. I've been play in every day for The last 6 years and am pretty good if I say so myself. So son, college, old ladies nagging, and work has slowed it down. Then I started building amps and all I want to do is build amps! Of course when I pick up my electric that changes.

Anyways, allman brothers-whipping post, live at the Fillmore 1970. It warms my soul. Makes me want to play more.

Yeah, life has bad habit of getting in the way. Everyone's got priorities. They keep shifting. Having kids is a big responsibility. They come first and you should love every minute of it. Once they are grown and fly from the nest, you'll wish for just a little more time. When my 24 year old spends the night, I'm always melancholy when she leaves.

For die hard ABB fans, haunt youtube and you'll probably find at least a dozen or so great performances of the original band. (Some are just crap -- awful sound quality. Skip those.) Listen to them and I think you'll find in the seminal years they were continuously finding their way. Musical arrangements change -- sometimes in subtle ways and sometimes not so subtle. You'll hear some gaffs quickly smoothed over, not perfect like the Fillmore album. Look for Statesboro Blues where Dickey takes the first solo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUdc5A5qZfo I think it works so much better and is a good example of how they could mix it up.

Please forgive the hijack.
Here it is live.

Frank did a version of Whippin' Floss that was a bit manic. My guess is that he was drawn to it for the 11/8 section leading to the verses.

And then there is Pat Travers version

... which I like almost as well as the Filmore ABB version.

Give a listen.

I saw Greg Allman last month and that was pretty much the arrangement but with less slide, horns and second keyboard. I remember thinking it seemed short and sweet for Whipping Post, like around 4 minutes. I saw the original lineup do the 20 minute version in 1971. Live, I'd still have to go with that one but Greg's was sweet.
