Traynor black box trem bug

Post by Stevem »

I have a 1972 Traynor on the bench that is in need of a new black box type tremolo bug, any one know where to get such as its a big job to switch this thing over to a Fender trem circuit so staying away from that would make me real happy!
Thanks in advance for any help!

Any markings on the black box?
Is there a reference schematic? There may be information implied by the schematic even if the part itself isn't identified.

It's a YGL-3,there seems to be some part numbers on the bottom of it but I need to get the old adhesive foam off of the bottom some how with out doing harm to the lettering!

Have you tried contacting Yorkville Sound to see if they can provide a replacement, or failing that detailed specs for the bulb & LDR to rebuild the original. I've not needed help from them but I've heard they today grasp values of good support in keeping their brand alive and good.

Here's a schematic for one of the YGL-3's. There seems to be several variants. The trem part number looks to be the same on all the schems I could find though.

Hard to read, but looks like

NSL PL-2H36-1

Found a data sheet for that part number -attached.

Hope this helps.

Thank you big time for that info! And yes that model number LDR is what I will have to say this amp came with from the numbers and such I can still make out on it.
Thanks to all who responded!

Well a spent a hour yesterday getting access to the inside of this things black plastic case trem bug!
With the info I was given here I knew that the cell was bad as it when dark it read 3.8K and not 50 meg like it should be,but I wanted to get it open to also see if the NE-2 neon bulb still worked, which it did!

I had to use a belt sander to grind thru five of its sides and as I did I found that the cell and bulb where potted in what seemed to be hot glue!
So a hour latter after snipping away with small cutters and slicing with a Xacto knife I had it all cleaned out.

So far I have not be able to find a cell to work, and this cell is near three times the size of the cell in a Fender bug besides being far and above higher in resistance!
I may try 3 fender cells in series, or the other possibility is that I spoke to Fuchs amps yesterday and he is remaking Ampeg bugs and the cell he uses is 500 meg when dark.
It should also be noted that I found that the hot glue inside this thing had turned very yellow with age so even if they work in a Traynor the heat of 20 or more years ( this amp was born in 72!) will yellow and degrade the Trems perfromance by then, no less 40 plus years down the road!
Sorry this got so long, but I wanted to pass the info along.

Build your own. I imagine that's what you're thinking because you are already half way there. You should be able to find an LDR of approximately the correct value and it should be about $1. Search eBay for "photoresistor" or "CDScell." Since the bulb is still good, you don't need to find one of those and I imagine an NE-2 is easy to source anyway. In the plumbing department at your local store, you can find a piece of small diameter pipe, or just improvise with a bit of cardboard and heat shrink. Put the bulb at one end and the cell at the other, and cover with some epoxy-like material. I'm thinking about the stuff you buy at the auto parts store in putty form. You knead it to mix the black stuff with the grey stuff and stuff it in the end of pipe to cement it closed. This should keep your components in place and block out the light. Good luck with this.
