Hey guys,
The other amp that is giving me grief at the moment is a project i picked up cheap. It's a Traynor Bass Mate combo. It's a transition model, similar to the final schematic on this page, but a few little changes, including being wired for a 2 prong cord. Changing that is up, but it gets some weirdness when i turn down the treble control. gets kinda gainy and weird. When i bought it it had preamp tubes that were almost DEAD, I figured the OT was on its last legs, but a new set of 12ax7's quadrupled the volume. but now it is wonky with the treble turned down.
I am not a "Must be stock" sort of guy, but I do appreciate the funkyness of the original amp. SO, do you guys think i should find and repair the damage (I think the pot is going, and some of the tone control section may have drifted WAY off spec... 40 year old amp and all) OR should i gut it and build a Matchless Spitfire combo.... which was my original plan lol...
Or something else?
Heres a link to the schematic. It's got a pretty robust PT, but the OT may be a little suspect.... Though i have heard of people subbing in Weber's OT from their princetons with good results, and I just happen to have subbed a new OT into my Princeton clone... so i have one of those OT's gathering dust!

Re: What would YOU DO part II
I would replace that faulty 250k L taper treble pot first and see what that gets you or jump it out for now with a 250k or so resistor to trouble shoot it!

I think that will be the first order of business. I have a PEC 250k in my workshop, so that should be in better shape than a 40 year old student grade part.
I was messing around with tube substitutions this morning and put a 12au7 in the preamp and it sounded so sweet, I think I'll keep it 99% stock... just the 3 prong plug and replace parts that are out of spec.

BUT
TO bring it around again,
THere is someone i know local with a YGL3A with a busted tremolo.... Horrible "Baby Bumper" amp (they look pretty 70's lol)
I can probably get it for a trade.... some stuff I am not using....
Very tempted to make that my new "project chassis"
LOTS of room to mess with it.... Or fix that one too.... dammit!
