What size variac?

Post by jamme61 »

I've been using a General Radio Company (Type W5MT ) Variac. its 5 amp is that enough for 100 watt tube amp? I'd rather not go with 10 amp it's bigger and cost to much will the 5 amp be ok ? I use it to bring the amp down to 90 volts for at home playing thanks

5 amps should be fine for a 100 watt amp. However anything bigger will need a larger model. One easy way to check is the rating of your mains fuse. If its less than that of the variac, it will work fine. A standard 100 watt superlead calls for a 4 amp mains fuse if I remember correctly.
