Transformer replacement question

Post by gui_tarzan »

So if I have two 6L6GCs at 500v on the OT, and the replacement transformer at say CE says it's 4K2 @ 4 ohms, would it put too much of a strain on the transformer or tubes if I used a Heyboer 65w transformer that's rated at 3K5 @ 4 ohms if I ran the tube plates at say 425-450v?

I know it is second nature to some of you but I'm still learning the technical side of some of these parts and won't use it if it's not adequate.

Well first off with the wattage output levels you are taking about I will assume we are talking about a fixed bias stage as that matters also in this discussion !
With 500 volts on the plate and a OT impedance of 4200 you will be pushing a OT rated for 65 watts of em's power pretty much to its max with a strong pair of output tubes, so I would shoot for having only 450 on the plate unless you go with a OT with a impedance of 6600.

Plug the numbers into http://bmamps.com/Tech_tds.html and see what you get.
Bear in mind to factor in sag, which will reduce the plate and screen grid voltages, compared to their static values.
My experience is that in a regular silicon rectified regular amp circuit, 6L6GC put out most power into around 5 to 6k.

pdf64, that calculator doesn't display results, doesn't show anything.

That's unfortunate, what browser and operating system are you using?

Ah, it does when you move the sliders (with Chrome). Very nice tool, thanks!
