So I bought my second Marshall today....

Post by schaublin65 »

Hi

here in ireland we have a site called Adverts.ie that is worth keeping an eye on.

Haggling and trades are custom and practice 8)

So when I saw a little Marshall JCM 2000 401 DSL in distress I pulled the trigger for 190 euro.

They have a well known issue with a heater rectifier. Confirmed when I pulled it out today.

The bad news................

MDF cabinet

Seriously.............MDF

So it's box building time.

Take care till the next episode....

Just had one thru my shop last week. All but one tube were trashed. Then on testing first 3 pre tubes went dark. Re soldering the heater rectifier to board brought it back & I hope it stays that way. Customer will have to suffer the sonic deficiencies of MDF. Once running, I thought it was a dam' fine sounding amp, as the other 2000's are. Shame they're such a collection of problems and crapola pots besides.

If you're building a fresh cab I'm sure you'll make it a millimeter or 2 wider wall-to-wall so you don't have to hammer the chassis into it. Marshall - what. were. they. thinking? Had they built it just a hair wider would have saved me a lot of very blue language & elevated blood pressure.

Hi,

I was lucky enough to have my brother there to help extract the chassis.

A tight fit for sure.

I'm happy to hear you liked the one you were working on.

The replacement rectifier will be available for collection later today.

It's a cute little thing and so easy to carry. I fixed a jcm 900 100W with a JBL in it recently. A heavy lump to move.

I will play with it for a while before I decide its future. I haven't had a high gain amp in the collection for a while...

take care............

Like a boxfull of bowling balls. Only time I ever blew up a JBL E120 was running one off a 100W Marshall. Goes to show you can wreck a 300W rated speaker with a 100W amp. An expensive and embarrassing lesson. Hope the 900's owner either uses an extension cab to share the power wealth, or has enough sense to not crank it up to window-busting volume.

Hi,

I will be putting new filter caps into the 100w with the JBL soon. I will pass your warning along.

He has it from new. Apparently he first used it with the bass rolled off and by now has it turned up. Hopefully new filters will help a little. There are few enough of them compared to a superlead.

From what I read it seems the 800 series are the last ones with good build standards. What can you do?

take care............
