Conjunctive filter AND Zobel in same rig?

Post by Gainzilla »

Any harm done? Will the universe implode or is this ok? Seems kinda like double dipping. I feel like it might just sterilize the tone, but maybe not?

The deal is: I have two amps (both el84 high gainers) that often use the same cab. Amp 1 (a combo) has a conjunctive filter, amp 2 doesn't. I was thinking of adding one to amp 2 but thought maybe I could just put a zobel in the cab instead. Unless I removed the conjunctive filter from the amp 1, it would have both filters at once when using the external cab. Removing the filter would leave me nekked when running as a combo. This amp really sounds better with the filter so tha doesn't seem like an option.

Thoughts?

Cheers!

Corner frequencies may be very different ??

Conjunctive filters and Zobels do different things.

Conjunctive filters change the internal phase/frequency response of the tube plate/transformer setup. Zobels change the loading on the output with frequency, and help keep the output from being unloaded by speaker-wire capacitance at high frequencies.

As trobbins notes, the exact interactions depend on the corner frequencies of the filters in the circuit. They may be moved apart so they don't interact much.

Thanks for the replies! Ok, I think I have it. Short answer is that it won't hurt anything, but I may notice some adverse effects of having them both in at the same time. I could potentially minimize this by playing with the values a bit.

Ideally I wouldn't need either but I haven't found another way to tame the jangley annoying harshness of el84s in a high gain design.

Thanks!
