Building D'lator out of Vox Lil night train

Post by beasleybodyshop »

So, I just finished my 102 Dumble build - after some HF taper tweaks, I am really digging the bright tone! I figured I would go all the way and build a Dumbleator for it, something that I could set inside the headbox and build a breakout IEC connector for it so I would not have to run an additional power cable.

A friend of mine gave me a Vox lil night train that was DOA...So im thinking i can use the transformer (has windings for heaters and 300V B+ AND i have a little Fender Blues Deluxe choke that coincidentally fits on the chassis as well. Its gonna be tight, but i think maybe i can squeeze a dumbleator inside this thing using the PT. The best part is it already has a power switch, indicator, and built in IEC fuse.

My guess is that I can make this work with terminal strips...Anyone see any issues or pitfalls with this setup? I understand that using shielded cable throughout is the best, which i will do, but It will be my first D'lator build. Will keep everyone posted!

Is there an advantage to using a choke in a dumbleator? Does it improve noise rejection?

It serves as another filter component that helps smooth the DC out.

I used one in my D'lator since it was cheap and room for it was available.
It can only help.

Gil Ayan recommends a choke in the D'lator.

Perhaps this will provide some more insight about using a PI filter (http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/smoothing.html).

Since we're at it, I built my first couple of Dumbleators without chokes and with AC filament supplies. Out of boredom, at some point, I "upgraded" both of my personal units with a choke (generic Fender Champ, I think), and I changed the filament supply to regulated DC. Well, doing that entertained me to a couple of hours and set me back about $10, but it didn't change anything at all. The D-lator clones were almost dead quiet before the change, and just as almost dead quiet after.

Cheers,

Gil
Hello,
I found this post from Gil. I am working on two Dumbleators so this is of interest to me. Maybe Gil has changed his mind?

You can select the quote button to the right of a post to get this:

Hello,
I'm still trying to figure out how to use the quote function but I found this post from Gil. I am working on two Dumbleators so this is of interest to me. Maybe Gil has changed his mind?
