Another Tweedle Dee 5E3.....

Post by rogb »

Thanks must go to Charlie Wilson for the excellent hand drawn layout and all the others on TAG who chipped in on this one.

I have waited till today because after 6 weeks waiting I was finally able to go and collect my nameplate to top out the build!

The cab build is complicated with all the battens and floating baffles and took a long time.

I tried the JJ6V6/GZ34 and 12AX7 in V1 but it was really too loud and I didn't like it that much so I have gone with a more standard tube complement.
V1 - GE 12AY7 V2 - Sylvania 12AX7 V3&4 -GE 6V6GTA V5-GE 5Y3GT. B+ is around 340vDC with this setup. I tried a 5U4GB too but at the moment this combo is good for me.

I added a speaker impedance switch and a RobRob 3 way NFB switch which adds a cleaner less tweedy vibe if needed. This is specially useful if you need to run a pedal board. But I like the cathode bias and the grit available there.

I gotta say I really like this amp and the general tones available but it is REALLY loud, the guitar volume is down low all the time. I am not sure I will play anywhere where I can let this monster loose! By contrast the 100w 2nd Gen Hybrid and Dlator is far more controllable, even at home.

I bought a HOF reverb pedal to just add a little depth to it too and that is a nice subtle touch.
Did I say it is FREAKIN LOUD! :P But in a good way, it seems to like all my guitars but of course a Tele is made for this amp. Dynamics can be varied by picking and touch sensitive is not the word, it is alive, for want of a better word.

If anyone has a better idea for grille cloth, I'm all ears as I just "run what I brung" with this as it was lurking in the cupboard.

Very nice Roger :D. cream grills look nice with Red tolex, see Mark Knopfler rig

Your 50w #102 combo is still going well here, it'll probably have done 80 gigs by the end of this month since October :)

We're in Cromer tonight.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
Glad the amp is going well Marcus, hope it doesn't "crab" out in Cromer. TAXI!!!!!!! PS regards to Tom and all the rest of the band.
I will have a look at some cream cloth. The original idea was to get a "Redplate" look going, but now that doesn't seem too original so I might change the cloth. Hey maybe Mark K will buy it if I make it cream! Just had another play, it really does sound good!
I need to get it in the rehearsal room so I can crank it and get that PI trimmed up too.

Amp looks great. Cream grill is cool but I think it is right just the way it is. I know some guys avoided the Celestion 50 spreaker but I think those things sound good in the Tweedle Dee.

Has anyone tried another speaker besides the Rocket 50?

http://celestion.com/product/20/rocket_50/

The speaker sensitivity is 95dB, imagine if it had a 100dB speaker?

They don't seem too popular on the gear page, of course it is the gear page and they can be fickled.

I don't know perhaps Charlie Wilson can shed some light.
I know some guys avoided the Celestion 50 speaker but I think those things sound good in the Tweedle Dee.
The other item that doesn't get love is the GZ-34 rectifier most here seem to prefer the 5Y3, which is fair enough.
Yours Sincerely

Thanks for the kind comments.
With regard to the GZ34, I was hitting nearly 400V on the plates ( true to Charlie's voltages ISTR) so you wouldn't want to risk your NOS 6V6GTs for too long, leaving you stuck with the JJs.
KWS had his amp on around 8 in the rig rundown and assuming the GZ34/JJ6V6 combo, this would suit the size of venues he generally plays.
I would like to get a ballpark tone at lower B+ andlittle less SPL- I'm happy to lose a little headroom to get this.
I'm gonna play it out Thursday in a pretty small room so I will take the acrylic screen along in case I need it.

Has anyone who has built one of these posted a sound clip yet?
