Plexi 6V6 small chassis

Post by 10thTx »

For those of you who are fans of the Plexi 6V6, Hoffman on EL34 world has gotten one into a small 12" chassis. Very cool build!

Thread is here complete with BOM, schematic and layout and photos:

Great soundclips in the thread also. I thought soundclip #2 has some of the best musically sweet and transparent overdrive tone I've heard in a long time.

That's pretty awesome! I like his build process; running wires to the tube sockets before loading the board. Makes perfect sense, as I was just throwing my recent build together and trying not to hit various components with my iron.

Yeah, it makes for a real clean build if you do as much of the wiring as you can first and then add the parts later.

It also lets you clean the board up by removing flux spray and what ever before you add the parts

The only wires I do last are the pot wires because they usually are flying overhead above the parts

The mic placement has so much to do with the sound.
The overdrive sound in clip #2 actually sounds nothing like what it does in person.

The sound on that clip is pretty dark sounding.
I had moved the mic from where it was in clip #1 and it sounds way different than clip #1 over drive sound

The actual overdrive sound sounds way more Marshall Plexi in real life.

Here's clip #1

Here's clip #2

Same amp, same guitar, same mic but different sounding

Very nice. I really like the look of cloth wire. Ive got a Hot Rod Deluxe donor. I'm definitely going to use cloth for that (once I decide what to build in there, that is. Lol)

Also, why don't more amps have smiley faces? :)

I just finished up the Plexi 6V6 this morning

I installed the face plate and indicator lamp.

Waiting on a wood cabinet from one of my Amp forum members

One of my forum members made some cabinets for the small stout chassis and sent me one

I slapped some stain and satin finish on it.
The plain front panel needed something so I drew up a design in CAD and cut it on my CNC machine.

I just finished it and I like it

My Plexi 6V6 looks like it's done now

I'm liking how this came out too! WOW...
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.
