Yet another Small Special started

Post by lord preset »

A while back I converted a 70's Peavey Classic to a Small Special with good results. This one is for a friend who wants small, light and relatively loud. Its going in a 1-12 pine cabinet with a Celestion G12 Century Vintage that is so light it blows off the table if you sneeze. The chassis came from Ken Moon's parts Apocalypse that he held a while back. The PT is an Allen TP35 and the OT is a Fender HRD. I came real close to trying a Antek Toroidal PT but I chickened out and decided to try one on a more experimental build. I'm going to add Boost and will try one tube reverb. And no choke. I have still never done anything with a choke. Somehow it just seems wrong - maybe it's the name

Nice build. I am curious to see what reverb circuit you use and how it will sound.
I am in the process of building a ODS #124 myself and might want to add reverb as well.

Here is my post.

I'm trying the one tube reverb scheme in the 1st post of this thread at EL34 World http://el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=7957.0. We'll see how it goes.

More progress. I ran out of eyelets :( and while waiting for them I went ahead and built the cabinet. Pine sides, birch ply baffle and back. I use a biscuit joiner to build my cabs because I have a biscuit joiner, its easy and it's very strong.

After the eyelets arrived I finished the board and am about to start the brain transplant into the chassis. I'm also trying Xtian's suggestion of http://labelengraving.com/ for the front panel. So far they seem very easy to work with and reasonably priced.

Looking good. What are the dimensions of the chassis?

Cabinet looks great! I love Pine nice and light and smells great!

I like that one tube reverb layout. I will use a similar one for my ODS #124, especially since I only have room for one more tube on a 16 in long chassis!

I will use this tank for my build.

I am interested in seeing how your face plate comes out and how much it costs.
Do you ship them the material that you want engraved or do they supply that as well?

Cheers.

I think that's the same reverb tank I have.

As for the faceplate it's going to be about $15 for the faceplate + $10 shipping. They have their own material ("Gravoply" I think) that comes in different colors and thicknesses. I sent them an .EPS file from Adobe Illustrator. I am expecting this to work out - Xtian has had them make some very nice panels for his amps.

Hey lp,

What company do you use to do the faceplate?
Are they here in San Diego?

The Gravpoly laser guys are panelcraft.com. Awesome stuff. Here is my latest. This one actually isn't Gravpoly, it's plexi, lasered on the reverse and filled with white paint. So slick.

The laser process is also extremely accurate dimensionally. I spec'd these badges to fit the CDROM openings, including the radius at the corners, and the badges fit perfectly when they arrived.

Ready for a light bulb test after I peer more intently at my work. I've wired it up without reverb and boost 1st to make sure the basic amp is good. In the case of the reverb I'm pondering whether it should go before or after the master volume, and I still haven't decided what I want to do on the boost. The cabinet is done and the speaker is in. I want to test the the amp with the Celestion Century as I have some trepidation over how the neo is going to work and I may be able to tweak the amp a bit to fit the speaker if need be. Assuming it works the finished amp will be 31 lbs.

panelcraft.com domain is for sale; however, labelengraving.com seems to be a "service of Panel Craft, Inc."...
