Don't recall that rockabilly Mick Jagger track, must be from one of his "solo" albums?

Good stuff. Not much different from the film showing tube manufacturing at the Mullard Blackburn works.

That song was on the album "out of our heads". . Great Early Stones record. I still have it from the 60s.
Re: New Sensor factory video
Couple of things come to mind:
As long as those old machines hold up we will still have tubes, if they ever become unrepairable, there may not be enough profit to rebuild a new factory. Goodbye warm sonic glow, but Chinese may make it happen, the govt there hands out billions for all sorts of white elephants.
It's true it's not at all different from the old Mullard factory tours on youtube, seems if the Ruskies would just seriously focus on QC modern tubes could be the same as golden age tubes.
Thank God for Russian women. Like detailed, attentive, repetitive work everywhere it's all ladies and they manage to stay at it from 16-65. I figure if there were just women left in the world the lot of them would likely survive through old age and then the species would vanished. If only men were left, I figure two weeks and humanity would be over - once the take out food and cans of Dinty Moore are gone...

Re: New Sensor factory video
rp, I thought there is an issue with the chemical coatings being used today not living up to the standards of yesteryear. Seems I've read that there was no crossover for these chemicals into other industries, and so when the last tube plants clised down in the 80's, the companies who made the coatings, having no other customers to sell to, went out of business as well. I have heard that a new crop of midern-day coatings are now being used, and they are subpar compared to what was used in the golden age. ?

Probably true. A lot of the chemical stuff that was done in the golden age could not be done now because the manufacturing and processing released toxic metals and chemicals into the environment at levels that are not tolerated any more.

Re: New Sensor factory video
Probably a mixed bag. Cathode coating material contains barium, which is not too scary, but some effort (read that as expense) is required to handle it safely. CRT's and other specialized tubes are a much tougher problem in that regard. From a quality control standpoint, consistent electron emission from part-to-part and long life are the primary goals, and both the "recipe" for the coating and the processing (activation) are important. This is another cost trade, so it is up to consumers to both demand high quality and be willing to pay a reasonable price for it.

There's the conundrum, folks want high quality but don't want to pay a reasonable price for it.martin manning wrote:This is another cost trade, so it is up to consumers to both demand high quality and be willing to pay a reasonable price for it.
It's nice to see non-automation old school labor intensive assembly.

Yes I've heard its more the materials and chemicals are not up to scratch. I can't imagine that equipment in the video would be allowed in the UK anymore.

I bought a pair of shoes from a drug dealer the other day. I dunno what he laced them with but I’ve been tripping all day,
