Should we stock up on them?
Are they available from anyone other than Mouser?
Not sure, this is a military part and the composition is defined by the Mil Specs. I would suspect that as long as Uncle Sam wants them you will be to buy them.

I've noticed that the sprague black and silver 5uf, 10uf ,25uf, bypass caps are quickly disappearing not being ROHAS compliant. The xicon, Nicheon sound harsh to me. Any recomendations? for bypass caps.

We'll see. They've gone up in price about 200% in the last two years. Mouser is pricing them higher for some reason.

Solens? I've not tried any yet because they are so darn big but the HiFi guys like them.

Blake Gate makes some fantastick sounding bypass caps. 1uf, 4.7uf, and 22uf. They can be had at partsconnexion.com for $3-$4. More expensive, yeah. But come on, $4 aint bad.

I use the nichicon low ESR all the time and they sound fine, sometimes a small poly cap across makes a difference as well.

I agree with Brandon on this one, low ESR is probably the way to go.

I have heard (not tried) that Panasonic has several high quality lines. Also Rubycon is recommended in the audio world, but I have not found a good source for them as of yet.

BTW, I saw someone mentioned Black Gates, get them while you can, they just annouced they were closing down.

FWIW, Black Gates were built by Rubycon.

If I could find panasonics I'd be all over them, those are the most wonderful E-lytics ever!!

There s also a company called DMI that has all the ole sprague tooling and makes atom style caps.

You can get excellent panasonic caps from DigiKey. I've been using them for years in effects (yes, I believe I can hear a difference with distortion pedals and power supplies). I also used them in my Express. They sound great.

By the way, the panasonic caps sound very close to the Low ESR nichicon caps.

FWIW, I've A/B tested PRP 1 watt audio grade resistors and the Vishay RN65 1 watters in a couple of different builds/topologies.

1. In an amp with a cathode follower, like a tweed bassman style, I like the PRPs better--my ears like them with the crunch of the overdriven cathode follower.

2. In more Blackface topologies, I like the RN65s better--they add a wee something extra to the high end that's nice.

3. I use CF resistors on some PIs, and in gnarly amps like harp amps.

Have any of you guys ever used Kiwame resistors? I can get them quite easily and cheap(er) here but I haven't heard anything definitive on using them in amps.

I've only known them to be green. Yes, I know the hi-fi nuts (and I mean psycho snobs...lol) over here love them but we aren't exactly hi-fi.
