Re: A Les Paul rebuild
If you don't make that thing a goldtop I'll never talk to you again
and fill in the pickup cavites for some p-90s
Re: A Les Paul rebuild
Go away and play your telecaster. I still say black to hide any dents and flaws, and faded gold metal so it looks like years of good pub rock, but if we are all going to fill and rerout for P90s then I might just cave in to gold.cbass wrote:If you don't make that thing a goldtop I'll never talk to you againand fill in the pickup cavites for some p-90s
Anyway, the real reason I say black, is you got to really have your shit together to do a goldtop right. Transparent ain't easy either and if the top is a bit dinged and dented it's kind of ugh. What Matt Cortex suggested can work well even for a non pro without all the proper equipment.
Boy this is turning into some project, I need a break and a beer.
Re: A Les Paul rebuild
He's redoing a les freakin Paul time to become a pro no halfassin allowed!. An oil finish would be like painting an el camino with a brush and house paint
Re: A Les Paul rebuild
Boy I bet jestaudio sure is glad he invited us over. Haven't seen him in a while, hope he hurries up with that beer. It's getting time for some Chinese food too.
Re: A Les Paul rebuild
Man that was a fugly finish on that LP.
Gold top can be difficult the first time you spray it.
Best to build up even coats before clear.
For a solid color I would go black.

Hand scrape and lemon oil on the fret board.

Hard to go wrong with black.

Re: A Les Paul rebuild
Hey folks still here, a bit of a update, man do I take on some projects, I,ve been working on getting the top smoothed out and removing the last traces of the filler primer it had been ladled with, the headstock overlay is a total write off so I am waiting for new decals from CroxGuitars, colour wise its still up in the air a bit, sorry Cbass, no Goldtop love here my friend, please forgive me
I,m going to play around with some spirit based dyes I used on a Patrick Eggle I restored a few years ago and see what I like, scrapped maple edge is a distinct possibility and one or two coats of nitro or possibly shellac.
Ill save the oil finish for something with a pretty top.

Re: A Les Paul rebuild
By spirit based I'm assuming you mean oil based stain. Maple and oil based stain don't mix. Just paint it black then if you don't like goldtop.
If you mean a dye dissolved in alcohol that will work much more betta

Alcohol dissolvable dyes, never bothered with oil based dyes due problems with shooting lacquer afterwardscbass wrote:By spirit based I'm assuming you mean oil based stain. Maple and oil based stain don't mix. Just paint it black then if you don't like goldtop.

You pretty much have to do a goldtop now even if you hate it just to prove all the guys wrong that's saying you can't do it.
