Re: PTP builds, nuke drills
My electronics buddies and I used to grab them from curbs on trash night and harvest parts. Those were the days!

Yep sad you can't find donor HV power parts for a Jacobs Ladder or Tesla coil project sitting on the curb anymore.NickC wrote:My electronics buddies and I used to grab them from curbs on trash night and harvest parts. Those were the days!

Random thoughts:
This would make a great 500 or 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Most people here could finish it in 1/4 of the time it would take an ordinary person.
These are fun to take apart. Plenty of opportunity to breathe the sweet smell of melting solder. The parts harvest is going to be OK and lead length has been preserved on those CC resistors. Unfortunately many of the caps will be leaky and not worth saving.

Re: PTP builds, nuke drills
Electronics were certainly not better back in the day. The functionality and technology built into today's products is far superior to 'back then'. A big change has been the shift to disposable electronics. Mainly because most newer circuits are far too advanced to be repaired by the average tech. The difference between 'built to last' and disposable has created the illusion that it was better back then. It's funny to think about in terms of "everything was better back in the day/ the world is crumbling"...
Electronic equipment is designed using facts and mathematics, not opinion and dogma.

!!! Says it all, don't it. I'll be quoting you on that one.matt h wrote:"Even the trash in this country hasn't been worth stealing for three decades"
Is that a scope? Bet that thing cost three months wages back then. I'm looking at that thing and thinking oh boy, Vitamin Qs - ebay!some 1950's electronics was quite neat.
It's amazing when stuff like this goes in the trash. I'll often pick up '60s Italian or German tape decks, dictaphones etc in thrifts to harvest for pedal parts, some in mint conditions, beautifully built, cost someone a pretty penny when they bought it, bet they all but slept with it the first week they had it home, but what can you do, unless it has some striking aesthetic design quality it's just trash now.

How could you ever diagnose a problem or find a faulty component in that rat nest?
What a mess.
