Maybe the Spragues are being bootlegged? They've gotten so pricey I can see it being profitable. Wouldn't be too difficult for the pirated ones to get into legitimate distribution like the fake Cliff jacks.

They're bootlegging themselves, far as I'm concerned, and charging nosebleed prices besides. Though you can get a break at CE/Antique. Mouser's prices on Atoms are murder.

If someone cracked open some Atoms, and found "matryoshka" style cap within a cap within a cap ... then I'd be more inclined to believe bootleg.

Don't give them any ideas!

I am disappointed that this is still going on.

I think it best to avoid any E cap that is crimped on both ends with the rubber plugs.

Seems these are all suspect.

The sad thing is, that we build our amps using caps that could cause a problem.

So they sit there in the power supply with 300-500 volts on them.

Russian roulette.

Or you build a customer a amp to spec and he calls you back a month later to say that the amp blew up and caught fire.....

About the Atom caps; I just purchased and tested two capacitors and don't seem so out of tolerance.

Open the dog house and one of the two 20 uf caps was bulged at the end.
I checked it for ESR and it passed with flying colors, I did the same with my cap meter and it passed, yet with that in circuit it blew the fuse every time!

I never had a Atom blue cap fail on me before, no less in such a short time ,
How did you check for ESR?

Checked ESR with my ESR meter!

F&T caps contain zero mojo, no detectable glitter, and are not delivered by unicorn dreams.

The one's I opened up were filled with peanut butter. Worked great though.

Wait, crunchy or creamy? This has serious implications for overdrive...

I have seen more than few caps that test ok at low voltage fail when tested at their rated voltage(500). Vintage cap testers are pretty inexpensive except for the Mighty Sprague Tel ohmike. They test at the correct voltages, which is where it counts. As far as I understand esr meters only test at very low voltages. It's a good test, but not definitive.

Just bought an eico 950 off the Bay after seeing your post about the heathkit. Really curious to see how good the caps in my stash actually are.

You'll probably need to rebuild it first. New electrolytics. And then there will be 3 standards , capacitors, that need to be very precisicion. A little calibration and you'll have a good cap tester.
