Going to the movies

Post by martin manning »

I saw the Jimi Hendrix documentary film All is by my side yesterday. Pretty good, I thought. Anybody else checked it out?

It's on the see-soon list.

Some others that have been out long enough to be on DVD now:
Get On Up (James Brown)
Muscle Shoals
Sound City
Twenty Feet From Stardom

Non-music, but worthwhile:
Guardians of the Galaxy
Gone Girl (scary-ass movie)

Martin, you liked it? Now I have conflicting reports about that movie. I heard from others that it is complete fantasy and that many parts of the story are not true. The producer couldn't get the music rights so none of that music is in the film. I got the impression that it is sensationalized fiction. But I respect your opinion, so I suppose I'll have to check it out.

Some parts are known to be true, and some are controversial. I heard that the director claims that some of the contested parts are verifiable in the public record. The acting is good, and the fact that there is no JH music actually doesn't seem to matter. He played covers early on, so those weren't an issue. The guitar work is actually done by Waddy Wachtel. It's worth seeing IMO.

I'll have to check it out. I heard Kathy Etchingham is considering suing the film maker about the falsehoods in the movie. Waddy Wachtel wouldn't be my first choice. The natural choice would have been Randy Hansen, but that's just my opinion.

Most of Hendrix's life has already been documented for us musicians thru Monterey and Jimi Plays Berklee, and all the other concert films around.

That's Hendrix the guitarist, this is a more personal look at his life thru relationships and such. And that stuff is always hit or miss.

Fun to see any Jimi movie but this is a "story" not a biography of a great guitar player...

There are plenty of movies/documentaries that reveal Jimi's personal life and story through relationships. Interviews with actual people that were actually there. No need for this movie on those grounds, IMO. All that being said, I'll have to see it because of the subject.

I just discovered that the nearest showing is 75 miles away. I need to move out of BFE.

Warning: Siskel and Ebert type content

I finally saw this movie. No disrespect intended to any AG members, but that was a terrible piece of venomous fiction IMO. Almost complete fiction with some of the worst music I could imagine. Waddy Wachtel did the guitar parts and they were terrible. Crap playing and tone drenched in reverb to the point of making me sea sick. I didn't hear one note that sounded like Jimi. Not one!? They couldn't even muster one Hendrix note or tone? It was supposed to be a Hendrix movie for Christ's sake. As I said earlier, they should have gotten Randy Hansen, at least the music would have been respectable. The recreated footage of Hendrix on stage was comical, pitiful and poorly done. They showed him playing some 'Fenders' with the wrong headstock. That actor portraying Jimi looks a bit like Jimi and did a nice job with his speaking voice. He looked like a joker with a guitar in his hands. Phony, awkward, contrived and cartoonish...disrespectful and completely not believable. All the live footage and music should have ended up on the cutting room floor...along with the script. Shame on everyone involved. The representation of Clapton was almost criminal. In fact, the representation of almost everyone was criminal...except for Mike Jeffries and Chas Chandler.

I am a big Hendrix fan. I had to watch it because it was about Jimi. At least I thought it was. Turns out it wasn't about Jimi at all. What rubbish.

Sorry if I am offending anyone. That is not my intention. Just calling it what it is from my viewpoint. If you remember any of the crappy Alan Douglas 'produced' albums then you have a good idea how the movie was done. No nevermind, actually the movie makes that stuff look high quality. After watching it, I feel good that I stole it via torrent and none of my money went into the hands of the losers that produced that POS. Yup, that's how I really feel. :)

On a lighter note, I saw 'Hear My Train A Comin' on Netflix. Some stuff I'd not seen in other docs and, of course, some regurgitated film and talk you'd expect. I enjoyed it, particularly because I'd not seen a Jimi doc in a while. This one's newer, I think. Some of Jimi's home movies made it in there and a bunch of photos I'd not seen. It was good. Eddie Kramer is always fun to see. :)

Haven't seen, Italy dubs which sucks, for me anyway. Vibratoking has me worried, sounds like righteous critique. This interview's worth listening to, Andre's charming, his telling of how he got Jimi's voice worked out is damn funny. So, whatever else if the movie is lame it doesn't sound like it's his fault. WNYC/NPR won't let me search so I used google, this should be it, otherwise search for recent Fresh Air interview with Andre'.

FYI There's a Who doc specifically about the making of Tommy. Tommy never sent me, song here there of course, never the whole. I favored Quadrophenia, but just as soon leave opera to the tux and pearls crowd. Hadn't listened to whole Tommy A-Z since high school. Doc gave great insight, I re-listened and it was a whole new experience like hearing a new Who album for the first time - a Tommy virgin again. Apparently, Townshend really is a genius. He sure was hard working.

If I find what it was called I'll post. I think it's this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3291738/

Well sorry you didn't like it Larry. I'm thinking that your standards are probably a bit higher than most. If you google around there are quite few reviews, ranging from 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 stars out of five, so most reviewers found it at least acceptable if not pretty decent. What about the PBS documentary (which you can watch on-line free)? I also thought that was very good.
