looking for a good trem/ verb unit schematic

Post by Markusv »

Folks

a buddy wants me to build him a trem/verb unit (tube driven)
we are looking for something warm sounding and versatile with a variety of amps wether plugged into the input or through a loop

questions:
1. Any suggestions?
2. What are the most important considerations in your opinion when it comes to creating good reverb?
3. Is it advisable to use fancy caps and resistors or will they introduce an unnecessary hi fi sound?
4. Schematics if any please?

as always i value any insights

Markus

Check out the Hoffman ReVibe over at EL34World. Trem and Verb in one place. I think Doug offers a board for it too.

Can't speak about the trem circuit in the Revibe unit but I promise you will like the reverb. It is the Fender 6G15 stand alone reverb.

Weber has a couple of variants, the 5H15 incorporating the brown fender harmonic vibrato, and the ToreT incorporating for of a vox style trem.

Stand alone reverb units like the 6G15 and the copycats (which incorporate input-level bypass on the dry side that is then mixed with the wet reverb signal) don't work well through a loop. The 'dry signal' is the same level as whatever is coming in at the input, whereas the wet signal is only ever gonna be what's coming from the reverb recovery stage. The stand alone units were designed to have the right balance of wet vs dry reverb mix with a guitar p'up level signal at the input. (So when you have a line level input from a FX loop send as the FX unit input signal, the dry signal is generally going to overpower the reverb signal in the mix)

Might as well build a whole new amp as complex as that Hoffman unit is.

Thanks tubeswell
lots of information and sets me thinking that perhaps we keep the loop for other effects such as pedals?
the Hoffmann unit is indeed quite a piece of building
not sure i want to go that far if a simpler solution exists.

BTW i have a Traynor ygl3 with lush reverb and pretty good trem
perhaps i will steal some of those ideas

Thanks for the input regardless

Doug Hoffman used his ReVibe for this recording:

Thanks,
It's a 6G15 reverb unit and a 6G12 vibrato circuit married together

This link has more info on that

Here's another thumbs up for the Revibe. I've seen several of these built in the few years since I got into amp hobby. And there is at least one being built currently over at Hoffman's forum. Everyone has been pleased with the Revibe.

I built my Revibe a while back. There is a lot of circuitry involved but Hoffman's board takes all the work out of it. I used a basic Marshall style layout in a 17 x 6.5 x 2.5 chassis that made it even easier to work with. I consider the Revibe to be the most useful build I've done. It works well with all the amps I have.

I have been using my ReVibe for many years.
I have used it on maybe 20+ recordings

Mine is built in a rack chassis

Here's is my build page for the rack ReVibe

The Jeff Gerhing-designed Revibe is a hefty build. The harmonic vibrato trem taken from the large Brown Fenders uses 2 and 1/2 tubes

That's why Weber's original kit is listed as one of their most complex kits, were as the Bias Mod Tore-Vibe is listed as one of the least complex. And that's why Hoffman gave a try at a re-design.

Harmonic Vibrato not my cup of tea anyway. I know some love it. I'll take simpler bias-mod trem or even opto instead.

The Jeff Gehring design is the same as the Tore T except that Tore T took out the hum that was in Jeffs design

Unless Jeff re-designed it later, which I don't know anything about that

I was there when Jeff's revibe first came out
I took his design and created my hoffman revibe turret board
Then Tore-T refined it with just a few parts changes

Tore-T's simple changes made it quiet and usable

Notes from my library page on the original ReVibe
The original Re-Vibe had quite a bit of background hum.
I am not making a board for the original ReVibe
This section is here just for info purposes
