Speaker Simulators

Post by DonMoose »

I'm back to fiddling with my 'ToneLego' pipedream project, and am looking at some architectural ideas. The overall mission is to build myself a fleet of the 'canonical' amps (AB763 Deluxe Reverb, 5F6A Bassman, JTM45, MarkI/II/III, AC30TB, and so forth) in a single rack and provide them with a switching platform so I can run several at a time. Each would be a low-power variant on its theme - 10 to 20 watts from EL84 or 6V6 sets.

Each would also need a good fake load to operate into - something like the transimpedance amp in the Fender PRA, but configured in 'silent' mode. The speaker sim takes the power amp's output, applies a freq/phase response and drives it back to the lower side of an 8-ohm resistor.

I've simulated their simulator and get a somewhat believable curve (SuperSpice - anasoft.co.uk), but Fender claims their model replicates the Jensen 10" in the PRA (which makes sense) - I'd like to add some other options.

Anybody got a frequency response for a 1960A 4x12 full of greenbacks? An oval-back Dumble 2x12? An EV-loaded TL806 or TL606? Not the response in air, you understand, but at the voice coil terminals.

FWIW I was involved in the construction of "Bradshaw Rack" some time ago. The 'artiste' and I heard obvious differences when using resistors vs speakers as loads on the amps that were used as preamps in this rig. Marshalls - big difference, we used speakers. Mesa MkII amps , no difference, we used resistors, much more convenient. There's no pat answer. Gotta use your ears. Sometimes you can get away with using a simple resistor, hooray! Sometimes not. More work, more hassle but you wind up with a tone that satisfies your ears and that's what counts.

Sounds like a very ambitious project. I'm sure you'll be able to make it work for you.
