Egnater Renegade

Post by jestaudio »

Hi folks, got one of these on by bench with a suspected burn,t of trafo on the primary side, turns out its the surge suppressor on the mains in that's the issue, bypassed it and powered up on a variac with no issues, all sounds good.
I suppose the real question is do I really need it and can anyone decipher what the part number is and a likely source.
Schematic attached.
PS, the amp sounds quite impressive, may well talk the owner out of it lol

You'll need to go through Egnater to get a replacement unless you just get the voltages and are somehow able find an off the shelf equivalent from another vendor. The stock transformer is a low cost Chinese import.

Looks like an NTC thermistor. 25mm body, 12 ohms resistance. You should be able to find one. The "M" is Tolerance rating and the "SBY" is just lead type and packaging.

Looks like a common part, I have a uprated Trafo already which I will be dropping in as the earlier ones were notoriously crap

I don't know Bruce and I don't know whether the trafo is crap. In any case, the truth should prevail and no one should be embarrassed about it. The statement about the trafo being crap may need to be defended or apologized for if it turns out it is not true. But the pursuit of the truth is what this forum should be about.

As much as I admire Bruce and his work certainly within the UK there have been a fair few transformers expire , I only ended up with this as every other local tech refused to work on it lol, I have the amp running and its a decent sounding amp, if I can track down a replacement thermistor alls good and I get paid, I did pm Bruce a few weeks ago with no reply and the egnater support in the UK is pretty much non existent now.
I did suggest to my customer that I may be worth upgrading to MM trafos but with the s/h residuals I,m not sure it would be worth it

No disrespect meant towards Bruce either, but I won't work on those production amps. I have had several in and unfortunately, every one had suffered some significant failure and were total re-dos. Wave soldered and rather fragile boards and price-point components.

I understand these fill a market demand since most kids and their parents can't just drop three grand for a hand wired amp, but these were all but disposable electronics in my opinion :?

Finally managed to locate a close match for the thermistor, I needed 12ohm, 5.2 watt and 7.5 amp on the spec, eventually found 10 ohm, 5.1watt and 7.5 amp, should be close enough I hope, no thanks to the UK technical support, I don't like to bad mouth anyone's company but after seeing first hand the difficulty's local Techs have with this brand I fully understand why no one wanted to take it on, not even the distributor in the uk was willing to do a repair. :o

The upside is its a great sounding amp, easily as good as anything else in the price bracket sound wise with great features but Colossal is bang on the money, its built to a price point and it shows, if someone comes to me with one again i'll be running as fast as I can in the opposite direction.
I did try Egnater US but got told to speak to the UK distributer , I replied that the UK were not forth coming for spares and could they help and have been ignored since.

This is my experience only and I'm sure there are lots of happy customers out there, but it goes a long way to explaining why my local guitar heaven no longer has any on its shop floor

Thanks to Jestaudio for posting the schematic. I was told by my customer that the Renegade he gave me to repair wasn't turning on. A quick look showed that the heaters were lighting up, so it was not going to be the ICL and unlikely to be the transformer. Ended up that C2 (filter on screen voltage) was swollen and took out its fuses. Getting the PSU raised enough to de-solder the cap was not fun. Now amp is working very well except for no reverb. Anyone ever have that issue? Signal is going to the DSP board, but not back out. I haven't gone further than that yet. Moe troubleshooting tomorrow.
