I don't know if Rory Gallagher is under rated - he is highly regarded. But I think he was one of the finest guitarists of all time, and I don't think he gets the hype that some others do.

He squeezed a lot of different sounds out of that Strat, without using a lot of effects. Very pure and raw. I think he was ahead of his time.

Jimi Hendrix was asked by a reporter "How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?" Jimi answered "I don't know, go ask Rory Gallagher".

Nuff' said. 8)

From Glass Harp Phil Keaggy...check out the live stuff.
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Cornell Dupree, not sure if he's underrated, but for a guy who played most beautifully on 2500 records, he's sure not mentioned enough:

Audley Freed - anybody heard of him? He played in a band called Cry of Love in the 90's (or 00's?). He's a great guitarist, and very into good vintage tone - I think he's still out there somewhere.
