Adding an effects loop to an Allen Old Flame?

Post by tlainhart »

Hi -

Newbie here. I just built an Allen Old Flame. It came out great and I'm thinking of more builds/mods.

Where would I start if I wanted to investigate putting an effects loop in this amp? Is this crazy either technically or sonically?

I've not used one, but the Ironsounds FX loop gets good reviews. Looks like a pretty simple installation as well.

Tons of ways to do effects loops. The easy (and some consider it bad), is to simply put a send/receive jack right in line with the input of the PI. Problem is that is causes impedance mismatch with your effects, but what the hey - if it is good enough for Dr Z why not give it a try? Easy enough.

If that does not work you can use a tube based effects send/recieve, but you will have to punch in another hole, or you can use a SS/tube hybrid send/receive like in the peavey classic 30. Or you can go total SS.

Do you want a buffered loop or a pre-out/ power-in?

A dumbleator will go right into this schematic between the mixer amp and the PI Input.

I know people have built them in but a lot of people seem to think its better not to. What's your take on that?

I think it's fine in this amp to build it in, you already have alot ov stuff going on, I think it's not good to build one into an Overdrive Special because it changes the amp, and that's not how they were meant to be.

The reason that some of the Dumble "Inspired" amps don't sound like Dumbles is because people try to "Improve" them with built-in loops and reverb.

The Old Flame is basically an AB763 with a PPI master, it already has that tone-leach 3M3 fender reverb mixer resistor figured into the equation, what could a built in loop hurt?
