what amp is used here?

Post by eniam rognab »

youtubez suggested that i might like this Tom Waits performance from the Letterman show in '04, boy did i:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR5SHuJDlUQ

now i know the guitar isn't the 'star' of the performance, but DAMN the solo and fills that come out of it are just JAW DROPPING, almost hypnotic tremolo

this is what i want to do with my life, make amps that sound like that, plugged straight in, AMAZING tremolo.

could one of you nice folks enlighten me as to which amplifier he is using? i know its not shown much.... but one of you fender peeps could probably ID it pretty quick no?

thanks in advance!

That looks like a Fender Twin from the early 60s. I think the 'trem' is really a univibe.

The sound is a nice combination of distortion and tremolo.

i didn't think i saw any pedals... hmm... could be that thing next to/in front of his right foot. or hidden with the amp as like an "always on" situation.

i just wanna make noises like that

quote from Tom's acceptance speech to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame

"music is just really interesting things to do with the air" or something like that

Definitely a pedal. Sounds like a Univibe to me or could be a mix of phaser plus tremolo, but I'm going with Univibe.

Dood! Never heard a Univibe? You have been deprived. Here is a link with the master and a Univibe along with fuzz, Marshall and a lot of talent.

oh definitely heard of them, havent got to play/use one in person though... i am 1/2 your age and they are quite valuable nowadays... and i am scraping by... which is why i went straight to schematic mode... great link, havent heard that song in a WHILE, takes me all the way back to when i was 16

you are right, i am deprived, of a number of needful things... shouldn't go there though  at least my medication stealing 'roomate' is locked up with no one to bail him out, puts a little piece of mind back in my splattered brains...

oh yeah, that sounds fabuloso!!! thanks buddy! :D

Aside. Youtube "Warped Vinyl". The most useful chorusing/vibrato thing I've ever seen.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Looks like it might be Fender Blonde Twin. Tremolo on those things sounds great because theres both amplitude and phase modulation going on in the circuit.

Whilst univibe is cool 'n all & has potential to hit sounds in that range, sounds to me like just a hot telecaster into the blonde twin "vibrato" channel.
