Champion 600 tweeks

Post by haknuts »

Hi. Just want to share some tweeks I have made to the champ. Have replaced the speaker with a Jensen CH/Mod 6-15. Added a ritcher, higher resoluted bell-like sound. Replaced the dense cloth with a breathier one. Installed a larger primary filtercap and re-alligned the OT.These last tweeks to reduce hum, but did not pay off as much as I'd hoped. That said, the amp puts out some unreal fulldepth tone hard to belive from such a simple amp. A NOS Sylvania 6V6GT and a NOS GE 12AX7WA to heat it up. Wery happy with it.

You might want to listen to placing a .22uf 500 volt or better cap across the main filter or the last one in preamp section.

These amps have an inherent hum that is caused by the transformers coupling on the steel chassis. It's negligible and isn't really evident unless you get your head in the front of the speaker. I don't consider this a problem.

Check out my changes to the amp for some real fun... 8)

It starts by ripping out the circuit boards, clipping all usable components and throwing the boards in the trash. Some notable tweaks I can recommend would be bypassing stages one, two or both and eliminating NF. There's also adding/reducing NF. It all depends on what you want out of the thing. Also, I've gotten a great improvement by switching to Weber's Signature 6" AlNiCo. Great little speaker once broken in.
