New Liverpool and Hats Off

Post by DerStever »

Hey guys and gals,

A new Liverpool was born this weekend named Dyann after my bride of 35 yrs. Its mostly Ceriatone except with Toneslut's Heybour trannys. I did get a choke from Nick too - why not....

I'm running JJs in the output section and used Mullards in pre 1 & 2 and a NOS sylvania in the PI to round it up. Its very bright sounding but I like the highend of Mullards so I'll just back down the bright caps - as I use single coil guitars. The speaker is an Alnico Gold which I love with this amp - very English sounding but killer.

It will be DC Powerscaled when Kevin comes out with the kit. Which is why Ive put the on -off and standby in back. Leaving room for the PS and Drive controls in front. I also like the Jewel type lights so did that one too. Love the tone of this amp - it rocks and is more dynamic than my Express which I love too..... isn't there an old song about two lovers .... anyway I will play around with a few things too on it but what a great start.

Anyway again HATS OFF to the Wrecksperts on this board and thanks again for all of your experience and time.

Looks great man!

I've got a Liverpool and Express ready to be wired up. Will be doing that tonight after I finish the faceplates.

Post some clips when you get a chance.

If she sounds as good as she looks, she's a keeper :!: Your amp, that is :!: I'm about ready to fire up my Express, and like you, hope to go on to a Liverpool. May you have many hours of tonal bliss :D

:D Congrats of new baby. When they make their first noice you know that you have done something right. Making first tube amp leads to a fever which forces you to make more and more despite you do not need them. Then your friends are in important role especially if they play guitar and like superb tube sound. I had to give my Liverpool 2xEL84 to a new home like pets, but I already started a new project Twreck Express with 2x6V6 tubes. I hear Geetarpicker You tube soundclip all the time in my head and I wont back down until my Express project is finished with same kind of results. Best regards Harry

Harry,

If you goto http://www.sittinginbabylon.com you can hear what a 6V6 Express sounds like - I baised it in the middle so it'll use both EL34s and 6V6s hot swappable. The lead guitar is a tele and the 6V6s are Brimar NOS. The rythym guitar is also the tele also but the amp uses Winged C Svetlana EL34s in this track - same with the Strat middle guitar which is plugged in there on another track. A great sound. Good luck with your build!!! I currently found a couple of GE/Mullard EL34s for a good price on Ebay and they are in it now.

Thanks to all for your nice comments on the 'pool.

One thing though - I was corresponding with K-O'Connor re amp hiss as both amps have it somewhat. Ive been able to weed most of it out throught playing with bright cap values and reducing pedals in the input chain but he suggests the exclusive use of metal film resistors - no carbon at all including carbon film. I'm going to try this next week on my vacation if I can find all of the values locally. If this doesn't affect the tone and does reduce hiss its worth it to include in our builds - I will let ya'll know later on what happens. But has anyone else had this experience so far??

:D Hi DerStever! Excellent song with excellent sounds. I really hope that I was born with your voice for singing in my band. I don`t know what is wrong with our heritage and genes in Finland but you won`t find a guy here with that kind of voice. We should recruit you to our therapy band as a lead vocalist. Talking about guitar sounds, they were beautiful and I really wait now to get my Bluetone Express ready. I`ll do some modifiations to it despite it is maybe against Twreck philosophy. I`ll put 100kohm plate resitors to PI to get more that imbalance and some harmonics and I will also add a PPIMV to my baby. I use nowadays almost always metal oxide or metal film resistors though I am going to build someday a real MOJO machine of my ancient surplus carbon comp resitors, capacitors and other old tube amp components. Regards Harry Bluetone

Hey Harry - I wish that was my voice :D ..... thats my singer Mark's voice! I wrote the song and played the guitars on it - my son did bass and the rest is ETx band members on vocals keyboard drums etc. Thanks very much for the kudos.

BTW - part of my heritage is Finnish - maybe where I get the once blonde now silver hair and blue eyes. My grandmother Essu (mother's side) was from Helsinki and my Grandfather Kaarle was from Hanko. They came here in the 20s. Both are gone now but I was raised on Sauna and Finnish breads - grandma could cook!

Siunata, Tahvo

PS don't let this fool you - I looked all the Finnish names up online - I only know a few phrases but my mom can speak it somewhat.

I have an asteroid-style preamp w/ 6V6s in which I used RN65 metal films throughout most of the preamp (including all plates), and the hiss is MUCH lower than another amp I did that used all carbon-film. I'm hoping to get a chance to change that amp over experimentally to see if the hiss drops and the tone remains. That was a conversion of a Fender Blues Jr. and it turned out wonderfully, except for the hiss.
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

fwiw, i once tried expensive (can't remember wich one...Caddock maybe...they were 5$ each) metal film from partsconnexion in my Dynaco ST-70 (4 EL34) and the amp sounded hard and sterile with Jensen Copper oil caps...

Using Riken changed the sound for the better.
