Good on him! Quite a lineage that guitar has already had. I've got to spend a decent amount of time with a friends real-deal '59 LP and it really is a special guitar. Like a classic car where they just got everything right and it looks the part, sounds the part and sure drives (plays) the part.

I've not heard what he paid, but he's worth like $70mil, so even if he paid the reported worth of Greeny ($1mil)....pfft! No problem!

He'll make enough on the current tour to pay for it, I'm sure.....

EDIT: somebody over at MLP said they were asking $500,000, so you can be sure it was less than that....quite a bargain!

Good on him for buying it and playing it on stage! That's very cool.
Although, it does seem a little sad to plug it into a Metallica rig and reduce it to that 'tone'. Seems like a rig like that pretty much makes the guitar irrelevant. Of course, my comments are all based on my personal opinion regarding good guitar tone. YMMV.

I saw Metallica on 11/07 in Warsaw, I have noticed Kirk played goldtop Les Paul without EMG pickups, now it makes sense. Interesting that it was first time I saw Metallica live and I wonder why I focused on such minor thing ... damn brain ...

Joe commented over at the LP Forum that he wasn't interested in purchasing the guitar....guess his other 7x Bursts have cured the GAS??

Well there are good reasons not to purchase that guitar. For one, the headstock was broken off and repaired while Gary Moore owned it. That is a pretty big detractor.
