Lend an ear please....

Post by dogears »

I've been doing a lot of experimentation to fatten the bottom of my HRM tone. I did this one before work this AM. A little departure as I also changed the preamp tubes to Chinese and I used a Sennheiser e609 mic instead of my usual SM57. G1265 speakers btw.

Thanks! Pardon playing, just a test......

EDIT: Here are the newest clips

A little too fat for my taste - but you definitely don't need to apologize for the playing.

Scott,

Could you post a link or two of this amp prior to your changes so we can do a bit of an A-B test?

FWIW, I have a real hard time telling a e609 from the SM57 if the 609 is placed a few inches further back. (But then I don't have your ears... so go ahead and crucify that remark! LOL!)

Sounds nice and smooth, but a little dampened...could use a bit more of the sparkle.

Hey Scott -

I have to be honest and say it's not the best tone I've heard from you. But your playing is better than most of us on our good days - or at least me.

I kinda like the fatness. If you could get that fuzz off the bottom end it would be killer. I do on the other hand like a bit of high end sparkle with a lead sound. Depending on the sound you are trying to shoot for that is definitely a working tone! nice job playing also! :D

Try this other one, I added a touch of bass interstage. It seems a little brighter and more focused. It was recorded seconds after the first clip...

Fwiw, the amp sounds 1000% better in the room.

Hey dogears - just to be different I like both clips :D particularly the first - but not for the amp, for the more "out there" tonalities - kinda rough n ready. WRT the amp both clips feel like you're reaching but not quite getting what you want. Kind of like the bite has been wound back a little too far - does this make sense?

More please! :D

I like the second clip more. The sound is more focused and pleasant to my ears.

Superb playing.

The bright thing is easy to nip.... I could turn up the HRM trim a tad, lower OD2 grid a touch, change mic, move mic......

Thanks for listening guys!

Nick, agree on the 1st clip. The second was a super quick one to hear the change. First clip concentrated on the playing more.....

That's a big improvement in the bottom end. I'm missing most of the high end with these wore out ears so I'm not much good talking about sparkle unless I'm there with the amp. I'll take your word that it's there in the room with you cause it ain't coming thru the headphones.

Cool clips. There is nothing wrong with FAT to me! I can see clip one in a trio - clip 2 with it's narrower spectrum with a larger ensemble. Given a choice I'd take the an between clip
